Will KO Worksharp belts work on 3v?

My sharpening skills are sub par at best. I am debating on getting a Ken Onion Worksharp. I had the original WorkSharp, but was not very impressed with it and sold it off.

Will the available belts work on 3V steel? I have several blades with this metal.

I am also considering just getting a 1 X 30 belt sander instead. Any opinions on this?

Thanks!

What was wrong with the original?

It seems the issue is skill.

Not sure how any device solves that.

The 1x30 will sharpen the fastest.

The issue is skill, or lack thereof!

I did not like the one speed option, it seemed very awkward for thick knives, and I needed the cash at the time.

Skill comes with practice, get yourself a "practice knife" that you dont care all that much about to learn with.

Dont want to go screwing up your nice, expensive knives :-)

Take it from someone who may have accidentally taken the point off one of their nicer knives...

Yes the ko work sharp is more than capable of sharpening higher end steels such as 3v, s110v, s90v, and etc with the provided belts. It will take longer than say a blade made of 1095 you using the stock belts, but there's a variety of aftermarket available belts that'll help speed the process up...

I don't remember where but I saw someone selling cbn belts for the ko work sharp thou a lil pricey and they didn't have em for the blade grinder.

Ken Schwartz is one source for linen belts that you can coat with CBN compound. When I spoke to him about it, he said it wasn't great for heavy grinding, but would be a good match for basic sharpening on very wear resistant steels.

Brian.

Work sharp is suppose to be in the process of releasing a linen stropping belt for the blade grinder since the leather belt had many issue of breaking and blowing the motor.

On the original question about the WSKO and 3v, I confess that 3v has given me problems. I've sharpened many a Bark River on my WSKO, and with the A2 knives getting a very fine edge is a breeze, but with the 3v blades I can never seem to get better than a "working sharp" edge---frustrating.

As bgentry mentioned, Ken Schwartz has a line-up of WSKO linen belts coated with different micron grades of his CBN compounds, so they might be the ticket for 3v (although they're not cheap). Ken is a great guy and I bet if you contact him he can advise you on this. His BF name is ksskss.

woodworkingshop.com will make a 1x18 linen belt if you call them (they also sell 1x18 "gold" belts in various grits that work well for sharpening... those are on the website).
