I was think of something that was heavy like lead and shiny like aluminum. That translates into pewter but it's expensive and hard to find here. I thought about buying some bar solder and adding lead. lI wonder if lead and aluminum will mix. That would be cheaper. Anybody ever try it and how did you flux it?

Hey Peter

Go to a Goodwill Store & buy pewter cups
$1.00 each. They are usualy lead free

I'll check but all I've ever seen were the pewter Jefferson cups. They were more than $1.00.:)

i forged a couple of Hawks this weekend. I want to balance them. Lead will work fine but as usual, I don't want to do anything the easy way. I thought I would cast a butt cap and wanted something a little harder than lead. I also just wondered if it would work. These are both easily melted in the forge. I have no idea what the melting tempature of tin is or where to get raw tin. Nickle takes to much heat.

You will find 50/50 bar solder at just about any plumbing shop. this is 50% lead/tin mixture. I use this as a base for casting 45 cal. bullets. Its to hard for bullets but I think it might be to soft for what you want. It melts at about 600F. If you can try to get a 25/75 lead/tin mix it might work for you. More tin will make it harder, but for a given size more lead will make it heavier.
Lead fumes are very toxic be carefull. If you want to flux it to remove impurities try plain bee's wax or a dab of grease. Do this outdoors as it smokes like he((. Avoid mosture as a drop of water or sweat will cause a volcano like steam explosion and spray hot lead all over.

I agree with Tom.
Inhailing 45 cal. 425 gr. slugs can be quite harmfull to your health.
