Will RES-C eventually dry out

Will RES-C eventually dry out? Like when you find an extremely old rubber band; when you try to stretch it, it crumbles apart? Will this happen to res-c if it is kept in say an attic? I'm not keeping any of my Busses' in my attic, just wondering

Hold on ... just a sec.

Nope. Didn't dry out in at least 6 years. That's the best I can do.

Hopefully, others will come by.

If it does, it's covered by the warranty :D

Interesting question, I can imagine it will break down over time. Virtually everything does, eventually. I doubt it will dry rot in your lifetime though.

Res C is the most amazing habdle material I've used. Its basically invincible except for if you were to cut it or something.

I don't think it ever drys out. I've had some old and very well used rats and dogs with res C and they hold up to about anything and haven't dried out.

Good question.

Unlike Kraton, Resiprene C is a non-hygroscopic material. That basically means that it will not take on or emit fluids. It is incredibly chemical resistant because of this and long exposure to salt water, DEET, and other commonly contacted chemicals have no affect on Resiprene C.

Lay a Kraton handle on your dashboard in the summer and it will likely leave an oil patch behind . . . . . Resiprene C will not do this.

Since it is so resistant to UV, and chemical exposure, there is little data available as to life expectancy. It may very well be here long after we're all gone.

Hope that helps,

Jerry

Agreed. I dropped by the Corporation's extensive library, but could find nothing reliable on this point.

Of course, we could start some long-term testing now. But it would be ... YEARS ... before we had any results.:D

Pretty sure the main factor in rubber-band (basically just latex rubber) breakdown is ozone, yes it's not just something with a hole in it at the north pole. Fan motors can be a large producer of it indoors as well as those "air ionizers" they sell. Resiprene is one of those ultra stable, scientificamagically engineered low porosity rubbers, so all ozone might do is make the surface a little chalky after 20 years.

It's great to know research and a lot of consideration when into the selection of materials for the knives I get from busse-kin!
Gives me confidence that, not only will it not fail on me, it'll last as well:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I have nothing to add except for it sure is comfy in the hand when chopping or batonning. It seems to take some of the shock out of the handle.

I'm a big fan of the stuff also because it tends to lighten the handle vs. micarta and give shorter bladed knives more of a 'balanced' feel. The war dog and recent basic 6 are good examples. Oh... and the 511 too... Great stuff...

Glad the Boss-man is giving us some Res-C love... :D

I loves me some res c. It's a big part of the reason the satin battle rat is officially the best knife.
.(period). Officially.

The correct answer, and I am surprised no one else has mentioned it, is that the stuff will dry out. In fact ResC is worthless, and no one should have a knife with it on there.

I will be incredibly helpful, and take them off your hands.

This is an open offer. Anyone who has any ResC just send it on over to me. Rats, Dogs, or Busse's. If they have Res C, just send them to me!

I am a giver.

I love the stuff!

I love the stuff...the handle on the 511 fits just right in the mit although some have complained that it is on the small side. The 511 handles great under water as well. It does offer some level of 'cushion' while chopping.
