Will Spyderco ever bring back the Byrd Wrench / Spyder Wrench?

I'm thinking of buying one because they're being discontinued, but I'm not sure if I'll ever use it. I'm not a huge multi-tool guy, but I do enjoy a good gadget every now and then.

Are they worth picking up before they're discontinued and/or will they ever be back?

Well, they sort-of brought back the SpydeRench as the ByrdRrench, and then it seemed like they didn't sell too well cause I saw a lot going at discount prices at the end. The ByrdRench is not quite as nice as the SpydeRench, the main difference being the coarse metal file instead of the diamond file. It's mostly a multitool I hold in my hand and think "if only". If only the plier jaws were a bit pointier, if only there was a wire cutter, if only the wrench opened to more than 9/16". So I don't EDC one. But it is a cool piece of machining and fun to play with, and the knife is good, so if you are curious, go ahead and buy one

I think they're interesting tools, but bulky, awkward, heavy, and not user intuitive. Sorry Spyderco. :o

Hi EZ,

I would get one while I could.

Interesting history. We tooled up the casting tool and made the first Rench in Golden. It was taking too much time and slowing other models. It's very difficult to make. Then we tooled up a 2nd set of casting tools in Taiwan, but the price ended up too high to be competitive. Then we tooled up a 3rd time in China, but the piece is so difficult to make that even the Chinese version was a higher cost than to be competitive.

We've spent millions of dollars in the development and production ofthe SpydeRench/byrdRench. I would guess that we might do a sprint in the future, but with a minimum of 3,000 pcs, we'll have to plan carefully.

Hi Sal,

I'm a bit of a Johnny-come-lately with the whole Spyderench thing (didn't even know it existed until a few months ago lol), but I loved it as soon as I saw it. Brilliant design. Very elegant. Unfortunately for me, no one's selling the bloody thing anymore because it seems I've missed the boat entirely.

Do you know of anyone that is selling this multi-tool?

Thanks,

Mark

Your best bet is just to keep your eyes peeled here at the Bladeforums "exchange" section where stuff goes up for sale and trade all the time. However I would highly recommend getting a Gold Membership so you are legit to use all the "exchange" ( including trading, buying, selling ect) That way you'll be able to pull the trigger if the oportunity arises. And don't let the membership fee scare you off because I usually make that up on two or three trades every year.

And most of the Spyderheads and serious collectors know that those Spyderenches and Byrdwrenches are worth>> so don't get your heart set on a bargain. Most collectors I know crave those original, GOLDEN CO made Spyderenches in particular. The Byrdwrench is probably going to be a lot easier to find IMO.

If I could get one for a reasonable price I'd jump on it. Don't need the blade, though. Most people who would know about the wrench or spyderco in general probably wouldn't ever use the blade anyway as they'd have a dedicated knife in their pocket, too.

I've been wanting a spyderench for at least a year now. The design looks incredible. Hopefully the pliers are a little pointier, though, if they come out with a new one.

I was fortunate enough to find two of the Taiwan models recently, both new in box. I carry and use one, and find it is a very well designed tool. I used it to put a bbq together recently, and really enjoyed using it.

That's awesome. I would love to own one. Wish I had been around when they were still being made.

Yeah Mr. Glesser I'm with these guys we definitely need a Sprint Run of the original SPYDERENCH but I would prefer the original USA made version and preferably have the blade made with one of the American blade steels like CPM or CTS. It would make for an excellent collector piece and might even kindle the interest in the tool enough to increase the demand for it. Just like SURF just mentioned we have a lot of newcomers in the Spyderville community that never got to own a Spyderench and many of them would embrace one I'm sure of it.

I was hoping that it would become a permanent fixture in the main line up because the SPYDERENCH is truly unique among multi-tools. When I go fishing or hunting I always take my Victorinox Swiss Tool X along with my original Spyderench and the two totally different multi-tools truly complement each other. It's funny in a way because a lot of my fellow fishermen and hunters laugh at my multi-tools and a call me a "boy scout" or other puns but they are constantly asking me if they can borrow both units
