Will the Custom Shop ever open again?

I just read a disturbing comment in the latest BCCI newsletter. Joe Houser stated in his column, "A question I'm often asked is 'Will the custom shop ever be opened back up?' I certainly hope so but only time will tell." This seems to be a far cry from the earlier comments that it would open up once the plant is caught up and they have a fully trained crew.

If you go to the custom shop websight it says to check back in mid october it was just put on there last week

Mike,
Joe will have to weigh in with exactly what he meant but I took his post to mean he was referring to the old Buck Custom Shop that produced a wide range of models as opposed to the on-line custom shop that is very limited. Hopefully, he will see this thread and give a definitive reply.

Thanks for that clarification Larry. For those of us that aren't that familiar with all the workings at Buck it sounded like they were thinking of going out of the custom business all together. I'm certainly glad they aren't. :)

I hope they open again soon, and expand their options. It would probably do a lot for their image if people knew Buck was the company that would make the knife you wanted, even if only a minority of serious collectors actually ordered a custom knife. Everything is so "take it as it comes" these days with pretty much all businesses. If the custom shop isn't LOSING money they need to keep it open, and maybe even expand.

Not many Walmart shoppers are aware that it is an option (or was :(). Maybe it should be advertised. Do regular models ever include inserts telling people about "Pete," or is it only known to web surfers?

Mike,
Sorry for the confusion. I was talking about the old custom shop, not the one on the web, aka, Pete's custom knife shoppe.
We are hoping to get at least the 110's back on the shoppe in October. Once we get it rolling with the Folding Hunter, we want to start adding other models.

Thanks for the clarification Joe. I hope you guys are ready for the flood of requests once it opens up. I think there's a lot of huge wish lists ready to be submitted! I know I have a few! :D

wow jest got my newsletter and Joe is anouncing that the custom shop is part of history first the orgional custom shop closed in 93, then petes 110 shop closed before the move and now no more with no plans... jest a few spechel ones here and there maby even only for the BCCC ! but long as there is a buck knives there is hope! perhaps they will arthrise some one to do customs for them?

Please read Joe's post from a few days ago one more time. I will copy it right below:

I hope they reinstate the Shop as Pete's in honor of Pete himself.

Pete Quintanilla(sp) was the person who put the custom shop on the map. It was named after him. He later became a victim of cutbacks at Buck. There were a couple of threads regarding this. I've got to run, but when I get back later, i'll link to one. Hope this helps, guy

My local Wally World does not advertise or promote any of the knives they [supposedly] carry. The sales people do not know what the knives are either ("110? Folding Hunter? I dunno...we carry Buck knives...")... :(

The Registration form is the only paperwork I received with my new 110 and 112. On it, it does say you'll be able to find information on the web site [gives URL] and suggests checking the Custom Knife Shoppe [among others]...

I doubt that Jeremiah Johnson had a computer...but he probably had a Buck knife...
