Hi guys, first time poster here. I've come to possession of a few knives from my father's estate all of which I'm familiar with. Oddly enough he never showed me this Al Mar Alaskan Bowie.

This knife far surpasses the others in terms of feel, quality, balance and just fundamental craftsmanship overall. It feels special.

I don't have a singular question, this is a general inquiry as I'd like to know more about it. But I'll list a few questions to get the ball rolling...

1) Is this authentic?
2) What might the manufacture date be?
3) How much should it be insured for?

I have done a little digging but I'm having trouble pinning it down in terms of age or identification via markings etc. For example I couldn't find anything online with an Al Mar symbol stamped on the sheath such as mine.

I think this was manufactured in Tualitin, Oregon which would've been his stomping ground in the 70's~80's.

Any info, insight or just your 2 cents would be much appreciated!

Looks like a real Al Mar 4009. It was not made in Tualitin Oregon. It was made by G.Sakai in Seki Japan. The company that made nearly all of Al Mar's knives until after he passed away.

I'm NOT close to being Al Mar expert . Only ever bought one and it was very bad design and steel/HT .

Broke off at the hilt within minutes of first use . Just regular brush and small sapling clearing .

Al Mar Co. did replace it , and sent it directly to me . So I know it's genuine .

"Pathfinder " machete / sword . It was from some time after founder' demise , so maybe that is why it was such a POS !:thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

Anyway , yours looks genuine to me ,which means nothing to authenticate . I would go more by the owner and if he would have been likely to have fakes .

Here is pic of how the makers mark looks on mine :
