Will the Travis Wuertz Surface grinder attachment for the KMG work on the Pheer 454?

Hello all,

I am thinking about getting into making knives as a hobby. (i have never made one before). I have done some research and everyone says that the grinder is the most important part. I eventually want to make folders but understand i should probably learn to do fixed blades first. So i have been looking at getting a really good grinder. The pheer 454 looks good but my question is

Will the surface grinder attachment that travis wuertz makes for the KMG work for the pheer 454. Probably some time before I get to the point where i need to surface grind but would really like to just get a base grinder that could take the wuertz surface grinder attachment eventually.

Sorry if this has been answered before, i looked around for a while and could not find anything specifically on this. Thanks for taking the time to read this and help me along my journey.

Thanks,

Chris (bert2424)

I have a Pheer 427 and have the same question. Thanks.

Bert and Walt, the Wuertz surface grinder will work with both of your grinders that use 1 1/2 square toolbars in the verticle configuration. I used one on my KMG but I wanted it to work horizontal like on the TW-90 so I took the tool arm bracket off the toolarm and made my own aluminum tool arm with 1/4 inch milled off the bottom and 1/4 inch milled off the right side so it would be like the TW-90 1 /14 toolarm. I mounted this on my Polar Bear Forge grinder tilted horizontal and it works perfectly. You could tilt your grinders and use the same toolarm. Here is a photo of mine and you can see the milling cuts are only on the last eight inches of the toolarm so the rest fits a standard 1/1/2 inch tool slot. Larry

For 1600 bucks you can find yourself a nice used real surface grinder. There's a few on our local c'list for considerably less. I guess if you just don't have the room for one, the attachment is your only recourse.

Larry,

Thank you so much for the advice on that. This is great to know, really appreciate the picture too. I really like the pheer 454 and had talked briefly with Jose a month or two ago and he seems like a great guy.

Tony,
Thanks for the advice on getting a real surface grinder. I will be sure to look around for an actual surface grinder before i pull the trigger. THis would be a couple months out. Still have to get the actual main 2 x 72 and just wanted to make sure i had maximum flexibility with the pheer 454. From what i have read on the forums it seems people tend to prefer those over the KMG a bit.

Thanks again to the community here for helping new guys out. I love being able to ask people who actually own and have experience using these machines. Thanks to everyone, really excited to get started building some knives!!

Will the surface grinder attachment fit an Esteem grinder? I think it uses a 1.25" tooling arm.
Sorry Bert for butting in, but you got the gears turning in my head and I just had to ask.

You will need to hook a reversible motor to that or you will feel like an organ grinder :)

And do not forget to add the Y axis movement.

I picked up a Boyer Shultz 12x6 for $1000.00. If you're patient you will find a good deal. The one nice thing about Travis's surface grinder is the tapered tang option.
