Will this damage my edge?

Hi guys. Can any of you give me some insight as to whether scraping flint with the convex edge on my SARsquatch damage or deform it in any way? God I love this knife. :)

yes, it most likely will, if you are using actual flint. If you are using firesteel then it wont, but if it is an actual rock, strike the flint with the spine of your blade.

Are you going to ruin the blade? No. Would I suggest the spine also? Yep. ;)

Don't use the edge to scrape a flint or firesteel unless it's an emergency IMO. You're better off with a a file, a dedicated scraper or a hacksaw blade. If it's the comp edition sarsquatch, the edge is already thin, I wouldn't use it like that unless I absolutely had to. The swedge on the other hand isn't a bad idea.

It will dull, and mark it up.

If you need to for survival, don't really worry about it.

Otherwise, I would use a scraper, or the spine (if the spine is square), or a multi tool! A lot of the fire sticks come with a scraper.

It is not going to really "ruin" your knife, but will make it necessary to sharpen it, and wear faster.

The best thing is the scraper or hacksaw blade that comes with most fire steels(ferocium, fire match) for a striker. For flint and steel a more carbon iron steel would be best I would imagine. The spine on many of the knives are rounded and dont work at all and they are coated. This is something I was just thinking about last night. My BWM, B11 are obviously coated but also have rounded spines. You need a good 90 degree edge to strike. I don't think compromising your edge unless you absolutely need to is worth it. I will give that to Bark River I think all of the knives I have seen have squared spines and make a shower of sparks.

A cheap steel can be found many places on line for using a flint and steel. Kits with tinder, charcloth and everything would be easy to fine.
