Hello,
I bought a brand new Endura over 6 months ago and it sat in my drawer unused. Recently I sold off a chunk of my collection for Christmas presents and the Endura was one to go. The buyer noticed this defect when he received the knife so he sent it back and I refunded him. I figure I'll just keep the knife now.

Basically the backlock isn't seating correctly. It does not fully engage into the blade. This also causes the rear of the lock near the Boye Dent to sit very low inside the scales.

The lockup is still solid and I don't feel any blade play or rock. I do worry if over time the lockup and play will be affected. Please have a look at the photos.

I was curious, would Spyderco do anything to fix this? Or should I just live with it? I honestly wouldn't have noticed it and I obviously didn't notice it.
However, now that it's been brought to my attention, it bothers me.

I would certainly hope so, that is jacked up. I can't imagine they would not correct that obvious factory defect.

They'll fix or replace it I think. Are you sure there's no lint or anything obstructing the lockbar?

I was thinking the same thing. I used to get lint in the lockbar notch of the blade, causing the lockbar to not engage completely.

Very likely debris or some other stuff stuck in the blade tang. There’s also possibility of burr/metal remnants on the mating surface that prevents the lock engaging fully.

If you send it for warranty, I’m sure they will check & repair it (if possible) or replace it with new knife (if repair isn’t possible).

Thanks for the replies guys. I haven't check much into the debris comment but I will look into it this evening. With it being brand new I don't think it could be lint but it could be a burr of some sort.

So Spyderco won't care how long it's been since I purchased it?

If you are the original purchaser and you haven't taken it apart and put it back together wrong, then no, they won't care.

I have also seen debris in the lockbar cause a problem like that. It is harder to get to than the notch on the blade tang, but it can be cleaned out without disassembling the knife.

I’ve had several like this. I don’t understand how they skip through QC. Spyderco might consider it “within tolerances” since I know they say a certain amount of lock rock is also normal on the FRN Seki models.

I’ve found that Spyderco’s back locks break in / settle in a little deeper than when new. IMO your knife could actually be better than typical in this regard. Instead of the area where you press to unlock ending up a little proud when the knife is open, it might just break in to be perfect!

Probably right, it’s the ‘early lockup’ of the lockbacks.
As long as it doesn’t fail spine tap (not whack), it should be good.

Definitely send it (assuming you find no debris). Spyderco is a great company. If they say it's within spec you no longer have to be concerned, and if not, they will make it right.

Does it fail?

If not, then why worry about it?

Like I said before, I probably wouldn't have ever noticed. Now that I do know however, it bothers me. And I do see where it does make it a little harder to disengage the lock.

Wait. Maybe your buyer tightened that lock bar screw. There was a thread on here a while ago about this exact thing with the lock bar. Someone took their Endura apart and put it back together TO TIGHT. The screw for the lock bar was to snug preventing the bar from fully engaging the blade tang. That original guy loosened the screw, and all was well. Ill bet that if you loosened that screw a hair that lock bar would fit perfectly. Just my .02 good luck.
