I cant afford to buy a grinder (all at one time anyway)! So... I am going to try to build one. I was just wondering if a 1hp G.E. TEFF, ball bearing, 3450 rpm motor would be a good on to start off with. I saw it at Tractor Supply the other day... on/off switch, prewired with a 8 ft cord. Planning on buying good wheels and other stuff as I can afford it.

Thanks for any input!

P.S.
making a knife with hand files is to hard on this old man!

What would be good to start with would be an intro

That motor is good for a hogging machine. Bigger is always better on a grinder. The motor on my homemade grinder is just a 1 hp. I think its a Chinese horse.

It will work. It would not be my first choice but I've put 3/4 HP's on as a temporary solution.
If you want to start cheap, go to woodcraft and buy one of their $15.00 disk plates and mount that on the motor. You can get the 8" disks at Harbor Freight for $6.00 for 10. They aren't great but they work to get started or for utility machine.

Good luck!

One thing a complete grinder will always have is a guard to contain a broken wheel and keep grinding dust or chips from hitting you. If you cobble up a grinder from a motor and miscellaneous parts, be sure to rig up a suitable guard too. A broken wheel or thrown part at 3450 rpm can do a LOT of damage.
