Will Turtel Wax prevent rust?

Hi,

Would Turtle Wax protect carbon steel from rust? I was thinking about putting it on a handle before I cord-wrapped it.

Thanks,
Jason

It absolutely will as long as it remains on the steel, although like all wax it'll eventually dry out and flake off. If you're putting it under a wrap, you might consider a clear polyurethane or a really light coat of clear epoxy.

YES!!!

I goes a great job as long as you know it won't get rubbed off. (like during actual use.) For under a cord wrap I'd go with an epoxy as well. The small amount of wiggle in the wrap would likely take if off in no time.

Try Bri-wax (from England).
It's one of the hardest paste waxes going.
You can sometimes find it in better hardware stores or on the net.
Good luck.

I'll definately check out Briwax.

What epoxy would be best, and is it difficult to apply a thin even coat? I've never worked with the stuff before.

Thanks a lot,
Jason

Most any of the two part clear epoxies like Devcon would do fine. If you go with an epoxy with a longer cure time it will tend to be stronger. Like a 2 hour as apposed to a 5 minute epoxy. You can also thin the epoxy with acetone to thin it out for a lighter layer type of application.

Personally, I'd avoid epoxy for rust prevention, but I'm pretty picky about finishes.

If you're going to be using the knife, wear and scratches in the softer epoxy (especially on the flats) will be visible.
I'd expect it to yellow with age, especially if left in the sun (epoxy doesn't like UV--there are expensive versions with UV inhibitors which might be OK).
Also, if you leave it in the sun, the heat from the blade will make the off-the-shelf epoxies feel soft.

I'd say try it out on a 'throw-away' knife and see how you like it before wrapping it up and all. Maybe it'll be what you want.
