Will we ever see a delica flat ground?

Hi,
Just a question from a user:
I EDC a delica 4 which I like a lot. The only detail I don't fancy too much is the way the blade is ground. Overall though, the package is great (IMO) for EDC, sheeple friendly and very sturdy. I have also fastened a cable tie to the hole and now it opens out of the pocket like a waved knife
Would there be a chance to see a flat ground delica in the future? Or may be a delica size para military?

The Calypso 3 is going to make the Delica 4 unwanted in my house. LOL!

The funny thing is, I am going to hang onto my FRN Calypso Jrs. because they are still going to have a place in my carry rotation because they are so light. I carry a Delica 3 PE and a CJ PE around the house or when I am wearing light shorts because they are so light. The D-4 and Caly 3 are heavier and don't fill the same niche. In fact, most of the time, if I want to carry a knife as heavy as the D-4, I will just carry a larger knife that weighs the same like a R-2.

I think the blade is a flat sabre grind. It is however not a full flat like most of us prefer. I understand why Spyderco did it this way. This is their bread and better and most that use it will not be knife nuts like us. The standard knife user is not as knowledgeable on how to use a small folder. They will almost always use them as a prybar, chisel, punch.....something they were not designed to do. They designed this knife to stand up to the average idiots abuse at the expense of awesome blade geometry. IT STILL CUTS GREAT OUT OF THE BOX!!!

I prefer either a high flat grind (Manix) or a hollow grind on a small folder. I personally have hand shaved the blade on my Endura 4 more flat. I did it on a DMT xtra coarse hone. The primary grind now ends about 1/3 of the way through the spyderhole. It took roughly 2 hours on the hone - alot of work!!! I have experimented with the Edge angle on this knife and found the a microbevel of 15 degrees per side works well IF you remove all of the burr. It took me a while to get rid of the burr, but once I did it started holding it's edge very well.

I think the Caly 3 is on 3mm stock, and the Delica is on 2.5 mm stock. The Delica blade may be too thin to run a full flat grind on, as STR told me it may end up fillet knife thin, and too weak for anything other than light duty work.

Caly 3 is coming soon.

Slvgx, their handles are quite different - many like the finger choil of Caly jr., but the others find Delica's handle more safe (say by stabbing) and more universal.

gunmike1, that is true what you quote, however, one can, instead grind a blade with very high saber grind, i. e., a V-part of saber grind is dominant, not just ~50%.

I miss the old hollow grind.

I kind of like the saber grind on the endura and delica — it makes them great beater knives. I would, however, like to have an endura that was a little more delicate (comparatively) and I think a full flat grind would be cool. A full flat ground D4W would be the greatest thing ever.

Franco I liked the old grind as well. It was easier to sharpen without a doubt. It also was plenty tough for my uses - I never broke one. I still carry an Endura 2 or Delica 2 from time to time and still love them. This new grind is good, just alot more work to keep sharp.

The Delica does have a much better handle but the Calypso has a much better blade. Why not do a full flat ground Delica? It may be one of the best ever!

I'm still a little up in the air between the D3/D4 and Caly Jr. In fact, I was just monkeying with one my Gray Caly's last nite. I like the Delica's as a general use type knife - just fits for what I do most times. I like the new construction of the D4 but miss the point - I'm also one that used my D3 qutie hard, never broke a tip. In reality, I don't "need" that point, my D4 works fine (well enough that I own four D4's:) ). I liked the lightness of the D3 but the D4's weight is fine - the extra weight adds a bit of confidence. When I got a Gray Caly Jr. what really caught me off guard, was that it "felt" much lighter than the D3 but at the same time, imparted a bit of a feeling of being fragile, despite the fact that it probably is a pretty tough knife. Definitely a slicer and it was easy to get used to holding it - I also have a Native III, so it was not an unfamiliar feeling, per se. I have two Caly's - I bought one to use, and one to keep, but the Caly really hasn't seen that much pocket time despite the fact that I find it much easier to use than a Delica 4 on finer cuts. When you pick up a Paramilitary, for instance, you simply "know" you can push the knife hard:D When I picked up a D4 for the first time, it was sort of like that - you knew you could beat it up a bit. I was quite cautious on my D3 at first because of it's lightness - didn't take long to find out otherwise.... Yes, I'm looking forward to a Caly 3 - it's definitely got my interest.

Hopefully, it'll appear up here soon - gord

What about a cannel grind on a delica? It might be a bit more of a pain to sharpen, but it would have the good geometry of a flat grind and the toughness of a saber grind. Is it possible to mass produce cannel grinds?
