Will you buy a knife brand you are not really into if it's cheap?

I haven't scored in a while knife wise. But went into the pawnshop today, and they were chock full of knives on SALE!...But they were all CRKT. I don't have anything against CRKT it's just I already have a small box full that haven't seen the light of day in a long time. I've moved onto better knives so I almost passed up on them. But as I was leaving my inner thrifty guy said "What are you doing? You know how much they are new so grab them"

Do you guys pass up knives even though they are a fraction of the price? If I actually sold knives it wouldn't be a conundrum but I'm a bit of a hoarder.

I did however also got these two really cool Cold Steels which are my first CS. I should have left the tag on them, but I only Paid $30 Cad each!
I thought I knew what a BIG knife was with my Police 3 but these are monsters!

Is there anyway to tell what steel the Recon 1 is?

Recon is likely AUS8. Newer ones state XHP or S35.

I too have that bunch of $30+ beaters. Don’t usually pay too much attention but, like you, picked up a couple Cold Steels for cheap earlier this year. It just seems wrong to pass on a great deal....oh consumerism...

I’ve recently been moving away from having many budget knives to having a few higher end knives. Nothing against budget knives but I found I had so many of them that a lot wouldn’t see any use. I found it hard to try to rotate through my collection and I don’t like knives going unused.
If I had been in your position I probably would have passed even if they were a screaming deal. They just wouldn’t get used and would end up sitting in a drawer. I would definitely pick up a name brand I like but any money spent on something that won’t get used is a waste for me. The fun would be in the acquisition of those knives but I think that would fade once I got them home and tried to find ways to use them.

Once I bought a Sog Flash II because it was so cheap. I carried it a couple of times, grew to hate it, and eventually gave it away.

Nope, cuz I'll never ever use it.
If I know the brand in general and not impressed, I'd pass. Just more money poured down a hole and I would never use the knife anyway. I might pick up a Rough Ryder for $5 however as I am familiar with the brand and what to expect.

This is why folks might call a knife cheap versus inexpensive.

some of those prices really were low, it would be hard to resist... which city were you in? : )

I'm not a brand chaser. So the question has little meaning for me.

I have a plethora of inexpensive knives currently, but I have my eye on one higher dollar knife, so I am thinking I might get rid of some of those for cheap to fund my higher end knife purchase at some point.... But I'll use a cheap knife all day long. I just bought a 2 pack of Kershaw Shuffle knives because they were $20 shipped to my door for both of them. They aren't anything special, but they were cheap.

those are a surprisingly great little knife if you find keychain types too small

:) I do love a bargain !

But if it's not a knife that I believe I'll get some use from or have at least an interest in trying out and playing with ...then it's not really a bargain no matter how cheap .

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by your two Cold Steels. The Spartan is a beast (and that's a great price), and I regret not picking up an XL Recon 1 while they were still in production.

This is right where I land, too. My impulse "just because it's cheap" buys in the past have usually resulted in knives I ultimately sold or gave away. I try to be ruthless about keeping my collection lean (although I don't always succeed . . . ). :D

Thanks man! I'm OK with it being Aus8. Been wanting to try out a Cold Steel for a long time.

I live by Edmonton Alberta.

Every vid I watched with the Spartan I couldn't help but roll my eyes at it lol. I would have never bought one in a million years. But now that I have one, it's growing on me big time. I kinda feel like the fit and finish on it is nicer then the Recon.

I guess the old saying of " A fool and his money" might apply to me lol:D . My problem is I still remember what I paid for my first couple of CRKTs at full retail. I'm like that with a lot of things I collect. So when I find it cheap enough that it feels like i'm stealing it I can't say no.

Like a few others here, I have problems selling. As in, I can't do it. I'm a bit of a h*a*d*r. Nor can I walk away from a killer deal. So, yeah....I have problems.:D

Definitely YES,dependent on blade steel,lock mechanism,blade style,handle materials and design,etc

Yep, just ordered a Rough Ryder camp/scout knife. Will I do it again? Sure.
I usually do the Rough Ryder purchases in person after browsing through their entire selection (if I have the time). They are inexpensive enough to just go on impulse if you like their looks. But I know that functionality is good overall with the slippies. That said, I don't need any more regardless of price. ;) Does that stop me?
