This isn't mine, but I know where it is and may have a chance at it. I'm well aware of Mr. Scagel, but wanted to know what you guys thought of it.

Is it authentic?

.....how much money would something like this run for?

Well, a well known knifemaker in the SF bay area found one of these in an umbrella holder in an antique store a while back, paid about $50 for it, sold it for $5K.

I might be worth more now, that was in the early eighties I think.

First thing to do is to get an expert to look at it in person...........it would be very easy to sell if it is authentic.

Blade Magazine featured an article that had a story about a guy who bought a scagel knife at a barn sale for $15--wife said why did you buy that dandelion popper?--posted on Ebay as a treeman style knife and sold for $10,500+. I wish I went to that barn sale but it would be come a safe queen. The guy who bought came on hard times and wondered where his next house payment would come from and look what happens--he was blessed!!!

Are there any other marks on the knife? I'm not sure if Scagel always used it or not, but I am accustomed to seeing the kris maker's mark.

This is why I questioned the authenticity.

Maybe Scagel used that mark during a certain time period or something.

That knife was actually a topic of discussion here as soon as it was listed. One buyer offered the seller $200 and she was going to accept, but couldn't figure out how to add the Buy It Now price. By the time she figured it out it was already well north of $1K.

Hi Guys,

I picked up a Scagel axe on e-bay a number of years ago and it was missing the kris as well:

Best,

Yup, definitely a fake. I think you should buy it, though. I'll be happy to take it off your hands.

JK. Looks like the real thing to me, and if so five figures wouldn't be crazy.

Ask HTMD on this site. His name is Buddy and he does know a lot about this topic:thumbup::D:thumbup:

Also, give Dr. Jim Lucie a ring. He knows a little bit about Scagels.:D

or Gordon White...he advertises in Blade and a few others and has an extensive collection that is being highlighted in an upcoming book on Scagel.
