I came across this hardness tester on Facebook and I'm wondering if it is a good one to buy. It seems to be missing the anvil? I don't fully understand all the parts and pieces. I'm also not sure if it has all the weights. All the description says is that it may not be calibrated the owner doesn't know. Would $50 to $100 be a fair offer due to missing pieces? they are asking $150. And from its condition what do you think price wise it would take to get all the necessary parts and get it working.

From looking at the tag in photos it shows only the balls for testing. Is there more to the tag showing Rc range? Are you sure this is designed for Rc testing using the diamond penetrator? Can you actually look at unit, or only at photos?

Ken, it is a JR not a SJ so that rules out being a superficial tester. A JR will use the 150kgf for HRC.

First glance looks like it's missing the indenter, the weight stack in the back and an anvil.

I just have photos, It's about an hour and a half drive to see it.
I am looking to buy a hardness tester also. Is there somewhere to look for the detailed information on how they work, what parts are needed, and where missing parts can be purchased? It seems that the more postings I read the less certain I am about making a commitment.

Missing parts are about impossible to find and when you can find them thy are pricy. Only thing that really is not bad is the diamond brail as Chinese ones can be found for $20-$50. Last time I looked for weight sets I could only find them from the link provided for around $500 a set. If it was me I would pick it up for parts and keep looking for a complete set up. But it depends on how much your wanting to invest in restoring one. You should be able to file a complete working tester for less then that you would have into fixing up that One.
