Hey all, I just received a trade offer for a star-tac and I really don't know anything about it. I don't currently own any CRK knives, but have been half-heartedly looking for one. What are everyones thought on the star-tac? It looks to me exactly like an umnumzaan with a star pattern on the handles. Any pros/cons vs a CRK umnumzaan? Whats a good trade value for one? Thanks in advance!

They are the same knife with of course the exception of the pattern on the handles (scales) as far as value goes it does seem as if the Star-Tac version has a slight premium over the other. Of course as with anything it depends on condition and which generation of the knife you are talking about. In both versions the earlier knives are more in demand than the newer ones with the latest updates... New style pivot, new style gimping on the blade ect..that being said they are all very nice knives IMHO. Current Retail is $425.00 on the Umnumzaan and $449.00 on the Star-Tac. But early version's of each can bring as much as $100.00 or more above retail if BNIB.
All the best,

Thank you for the reply! I'm thinking about pulling the trigger... Just waiting on pics :)

The problem with "pulling the trigger" on buying a CRK, is the 'Chris Reeve Trigger' can only be set to '3-round burst', or 'full auto', and before you know it, all your money is spent. In fact many who innocently "pull the trigger" on a first CRK purchase don't realize it's on "full auto" and end up emptying the whole clip! How many bullets does MikePapa have left? We can only guess! :)

........you will love that knife.....if you can afford it, dont hesitate. The Wilson looks very cool with the new pivot as well if that's what your looking at, IMHO.

You will like it, at least I sure like mine. It became my daily carry the day it arrived. I really like the feel and the balance of this knife. With the Wilson starburst pattern it does feel grippier in my hand over a plain scale. I have never owned a regular Umnumzaan but with the pattern in that scale I'm sure it offers more than a smooth surface. Good luck with your decision.

Here is the post I made with pictures when I first received my Star-Tac; http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1144792-Newest-Arrival?p=13082949#post13082949

Looks like its one with "old" pivot, is there a huge difference between the two? Is there a special tool needed?

I like the old model Much better. It doesn't have the lbs, an unnecessary extra, which spoils the clean look of the back scale IMO. I'm not sure about the style of jimping, old or new,

I've never held an older model. The older pivot does require a special tool that costs about $14. I have read about improvising using toothpics or other small object. Some guys have

made their own tool or had 1 made.

I'd buy a Startac in a heartbeat if it didn't that ugxy lbs.

This is to good!! Almost as good as the "Muscle Car of Chris Reeve knives".

I think it's a 4-round burst. At least it is on mine.

I got five rounds off before my CRK gun jammed. Apparantly the only way to clear the breach is with more money. ;)

Funny you mentioned that. I've got 1 round left it the chamber. I'm waiting for my grail to cross my sights before I pull the trigger again. Or that's at least what I told myself. :D

get the Star Uz CRK man...one of the best. im sure mikepapa has over 10 of em :). think he' Chris Reeve's cousin or something. value dep on what they said. but easy 400+ on a bad day if original and not jacked up.

Well going to have a hard time picking what to carry... Got the startac, xm-24 and Ti military. Choices, choices.

Lol Lol!! I haven't read this thread since right after my post... :) my favorite magazine is a 15 round capacity M 16 mag. (a clip is what is used in a M1 Garand) or could be a "stripper"clip used to reload a magazine. But in the case of the M1 it only holds eight rounds. Most stripper clips or either five or ten rounds depending.... A typical Infantryman armed with the M1 Rifle carried bandolier's each containing six clips that's 48 rounds in each bandolier... My favorite rifle is of course the M1 Garand. ;) For some reason I like rifles with wood stocks... Chris Reeve Knives with wood inlays for some reason not so much... At least not right now.
P.S. Always carry a couple of bandoliers.
