Whats the diference between an 870p and a wilson model shotgun. Looking to buy one for home defense.

Not an expert but this is what I know

The Wilson Combat starts life as a Rem 870 Express
The Rem 870 Police is built in another factory by more senior gunsmiths and passes way more QC inspections.

This PDF file from Remington itself explains the differences. I think they are considerable to justify the price. I think the 11-87/11-87P has the same situation.

I'd love a Wilson Shotgun.........................

but I am not going to run a shotgun hard enough to need the advantage of a reborn tough as nails version of the Typical 870 18.5" synthetic stock version.

Just depends on what you plan for the gun and how hard it will get used.

This is Clint Smith, he's a very down-to-earth firearms instructor. I've always enjoyed his writings because of how simple he views most things, and because of how no-frills most of his weapon choices are.

I'm of the opinion that less is more! Just get the 870, spend the difference on ammo to practice with (or better yet training!). You just need something light and handy that you're comfortable with, that'll shoot some lead when you need it to.

This is my opinion and I could be wrong:
What the 870P is today is what the older 870 Wingmasters were, companies used to turn out great products in their basic line (Gerber and Buck used to make superb knives), as the economy changed and more shotguns were available by many companies, Remington came out with the Express line to compete with the less expensive ones. The Express is a "light" version of the famous regular 870 that created the fame as an indestructible, reliable shotgun. Most people that buy shotguns won't use them as hard as a LE agency so they can afford to cut a few corners (MIM extractors versus forged milled pieces, plastic trigger guard versus metal etc...) because your average Walmart buyer will buy one for just in case or to shoot infrequently at the range. If you are looking for the "legendary" 870 you have to buy the 870P. I spoke with Remington and even the 870 Marine is an 870 Express coated with Nickle.

It's like for example the Gerber Mark II, when it was made of L-6 Tool Steel it was the stuff of legends, now it is made out of 440A, not bad just not the same.

Good call Will. Im a HUGE fan of Clint Smith. I have several of his training DVDs. Learned alot of my defensive pistol and shotgun stuff from them.

Id love to go to Thunder Ranch for a class some day.

Get the 870. Ya cant go wrong. Remington makes a fine shotgun.

I've put a few thousand rounds through my 870Express and had no issues. If you have the budget for it, go ahead and get the P or the wilson, but if I was spending the money I'd get a stock 870 with a hunting barrel and order a vang barrel.

I'm completely ambivalent onthe sights. My military training used standard mossbergs (another good choice, they are often on sale at more common shops with a defense and a hunting barrel included) and honestly, I don't use the sights unless I'm hunting or shooting past 15 yards anyway.

And that, is a mater of practice. look up the old "quick kill" and "quick skill" programs. blow through 100 rounds of cheap bulk federal practice ammo from walmart every week for a year. you'll be better off than getting the most expnsive shotgun and runnin 200 rounds a year through it :)

I won't get into debates on home defense loads, but I will state that our house gun is loaded with #3 buck as a compromise. (slugs available, and I'm fast enough at on the fly loading- that's part of the practice)
