I want to buy a 2x72 belt grinder. Can I get some input as to which is the better grinder. Also what is the concideration for selecting a contact wheel, serrated or smooth? At the present time I only flat grind small blades for wood carving. Should I go with the Wilton Square Wheel or the JL grinder?

Thanks for your help,
Cliff

they are both good grinders but there is one out now that is cheaper an is well made go with a smooth wheel serated wheels grind great for hogging steal but they don't finsh up a blade.rob frink is making a grinder that look almost likes a bader you may want to check it out the price is 680
hope i have been of some help

Cliff,
I have recently purchased a wilton, but it is an older model made by olympia, not the hong knog specials like they are now. Buy thebest you can, you will make better knives. I look at it as i'm too poor to buy cheap.

I would recommend you do a search of the forum with this question (you'll be reading for awhile with all the returns you get).

I have heard more and more good words on the JL. I personally use a Burr King, but they are no longer being sold in the knifemaking model.

I also agree with Nathan, you should contact Rob on his machines.

The Wilton is a good machine, and it has been a staple of the knifemaking industry for a long time...but there are better machines (IMHO) now.

Hi Clif,
I have owned and used a Square Wheel, Bur-King, JL, and Bader. I only own one grinder now and it is a JL. It is based off of a square wheel but build a lot better. Changing from one operation to another is fast. It is hand made by a knife maker for knifemakers. I feel that this grinder encompasses all of the grinders I have used in the past in one good unit.

To answer your question on serrated versus plain wheel: Serrated wheel will keep your steel and belts cooler and at the same time be more aggresive. Smooth wheel do give a nicer finish. I own both.
Whatever grinder you get, I would recommend a variable speed DC, nothing under 2 horses.

I hope this helps out.

Id go with the JL. I use one at work every day and have recently purchased one for home use to replace my worn out sears grinder. The JL is by far the best grinder Ive dealt with.

Hi CLiff:
I like the JL ALOT! I have one vertical and one horizontal, and will be buying another vertical soon. I still have my original Square Wheel, but compared to the JL, setup time and overall ease of use is by far faster and easier with the JL. This machine has many advantages to the SW, and was designed from the ground up as a knife making machine. Thats my .02 for what its worth.

Take Care
