I’m considering buying a Winchester Turn of the century large toothpick knife. The abalone series 2nd edition. 18102. The seller is just liquidating a collection and has limited knowledge. I can’t find any pattern number information on line, and I want to know if the scales are shell or celluloid made to look like shell. My impression is celluloid. I also dont know the year this knife was produced. If and one could point me in direction of a pattern number reference guide or knows the answer to my questions I would appreciate any information.

Going to move this to the Traditional Forum....

As a registered user, you can post pictures using a picture hosting site. I use Imgur, but there are others. Once you have uploaded a picture to the hosting site, copy the web address of the picture. Note: picture web addresses must end in .jpg or .gif

Then go to your post and click the image tool on the toolbar next to the smiley tool. Click the link icon in the popup. (Looks like a chain.) Paste the picture address into the window. Then click the INSERT button.

I would not have a clue on how to post a photo. I don’t know what any of what you said means. I’m new here. I know what the pattern number is. I know the first number 1 is how many blades. The second is the handle material. But as to what material 8 represents I don’t know. 102 is the actual pattern. Any idea where I can find a chart explaining what the numbers represent? I mean Case, Queen and Remington patterns number explanations are readily available but not Winchester.

Or am I not asking the right question here?

The 5th and 6th posts in this thread from All About Pocket Knives have info about Winchester handle material "codes":

(Seems to indicate that 8 represents Bone Stag, which doesn't sound like either "real" or "synthetic" abalone. So I don't think it helps you much. Good info for future reference, though.)

Slowly narrowing it down. 9 is bone. 7 is synthetic. 8 appears to be bone stag. Looking at better photos the Abalone on this handle looks like celluloid. Probably going to pass. Thanx for the reply.
