If you go into Control Panel and open up any of the control panels, do you also get a blank box, or an error message?

no blank box or error. in fact, I have changed thi time there, and cruised around learning about this computer.

the windows defrager sucks...it only moves things around...it doesnt compress or ever "defrag".....i use the windows one first because it makes my other defragers work quicker since its all organized neatly for them....i use O&O defrag.....it have many nice functions like shadow defrang!!

Boy is it fast, can configure to run in background all the time or not.
I like it.

OK, at least it's not totally screwed up. It still may be a good idea to do a reinstall at some point. If it's a name brand machine, that's easy. If it's a white box machine (someone built from parts) it may be trickier, especially if you didn't get the CD with the machine.

Also, get a good antivirus and spyware software and run them on it. I like BitDefender personally, but there's plenty of good stuff out there these days.
