I got a FireOne refillable butane lighter for Christmas:

I like it but I'm not very impressed with it's performance - it lights fine but the flame doesn't seem to burn very hot. Catching anything on fire such as a candle actually requires more time than a BIC lighter. :(

I have it filled with Ronson butane fuel purchased from a hardware store.

Do I need a higher quality butane fuel to get better performance? If so, any recommendations?

It looks like that is one of those platinum grid type lighters. Most people find using them to ignite anything other than cigarettes is less than straight forward. There is a sweet spot in the flame that works fine though, Grab some paper and test it out. Most "jet" lighters have small holes and screens that are very sensitive to purity of fuel. I killed several before figuring that one out. Try a cigarshop for triple filtered butane. Press the filler stalk to completely bleed out all the fuel first then refill it.

Thanks for the info - that is exactly the experience I've had, that there is a sweet spot to the flame.

I'll look for some triple-filtered butane fuel.
