I have a Winkler Field knife ( a great knife!) with a tapered spine. Is that a hand forged knife? I get a little confused about the whole Winkler II thing.

Daniel Winkler (the man) makes hand-forged knives.

But if what you are describing is the actual"Field Knife" model, then that was a production knife made by Winkler Knives (the production house) - a model that is discontinued. And yes, those had tapered tangs.

I'm guessing you have a production knife, based on minimal info. But if you're not sure what to look for in order to distinguish a hand-forged knife from a production knife, then a pic would be helpful.
