I've done my searching and haven't found much on the Winkler II Belt Knife for wilderness/camp use. I'm receiving one as a gift and wasn't something I was expecting. I'm curious if this a suitable tool for wilderness whittling, carving, baton, and general camp use? Or if I should "re-gift" it in un-used condition.

I know Winkler has quite the military following and these knives are hard core (cutting holes in metal) but didn't know if anyone has any wilderness experience using one. Sound off if you have!

I got one based on rpn's review. I think it is a hard use knife, with a thicker edge than you might like in a wood's knife, but I'd trust it to anything. I haven't taken it camping yet, but will give it a try later this summer.

Bottom line: enjoy!

Do you like it RW? I hope so!

It is thick behind the edge and I'm thinning mine out a bit. An aggressive convex might be nice depending on what someone wants from the knife. I will say I'm loving the handle and ergos and I think it's a beauty of a knife.

I haven't done much with mine except make some fuzz sticks so far and chop into a bunch of wood to test the edge. It will be on my belt when I go hiking, hunting, and working on the farm. I have had knives with much thicker edges on them than the Belt Knife does and there is no reason it can't be used in the outdoors as well. I will end up convexing the edge on mine as well.

I believe the belt knife is a general use utilitarian knife. I really see how you can use them during emergency rescue from storms.
