I want a rock solid, durable, easy to sharpen in the field blade. Figured I would take a look into Daniel Winkler II series knives. There are two that I am interested in. The Winkler II belt knife and Winkler II utility knife. Any input would be appreciated.

Why don't you contact Daniel Winkler and ask him which one he recommends?

If you plan on laying out some real cash, go and talk to the knifemaker.

I would go with the Winkler II field knife. It's kind of a grail I am after and next month plan to snag one from some place. From what I've read you can't go wrong with one. keepem sharp

PS his reputation for quality precedes him. Never read a negative on him

ill differ on that. buddy had one and i sharpened it up for him. sheath was nice but the total package wasnt worth the money. The grind had a slight recurve by the ricasso it didnt come sharp. Nothing about the knife made me think it was worth 200+ dollars. not after he used it in the field either. I think they are hyped up bc some sof people use them, allegedly the same as medford ect...

people dont realize that the unit is the one who pays that price, not the individual.

As a matter of fact, Mr. Winkler offers a substantial military discount on the WK2 line, IIRC. My guess is that bulk unit orders pay that price. Part of what you're paying for is the time of a Master Smith, not insignificant. Another part is to offset the discount given to those who serve. I'm happy to pay the asking price knowing where it's going.

I've handled the belt knife and tomahawk my self and the quality and craftsmanship are outstanding. After the research I've done I think the belt knife is more along the lines of what I am looking for.

Bought the Field knife II nib. Like I said a grail of mine I have wanted and now I own it. Considerations, sheath imho is stellar. Lots of different attachment variations. Very snug fit and it won't scratch up the blade. Caswell finish is very robust. Knife came dull, handle to me is to small in girth and length. Blade is to long for the amount of handle, grind to thick at the edge which makes it kind of hard to sharpen. I have the maple handled knife and have been wearing it constantly for about 1.5wks. Using it for a lot of yard work type stuff. Like I said the finish is very well done, handle to small for me and now that I have it sharp it seems to stay that way. The build quality is very good. Mine will be up for sale before the weekend is out I think. I am going to try another similar sized fixed blade to carry just haven't decided on which one. These are my observations using this knife to mundane tasks. keepem sharp

PS Cool factor is very high cause it's a Winkler I can afford!

Honestly, I'd say as a first Winkler you should maybe try the neck knife. Extremely robust and carry-able just about anywhere, and the cheapest of the line. It'll give you an idea of what his blades are like without throwing down so much money. :)

I would agree with that save for the fact that I have never owned a neck knife I've liked. Looked at Winklers and just not for me. I tend to go all in when there is something I am really wanting( field knife). Not disappointed in it really cause I bought one just on reviews with no handling of one by me. The knife gets sharp and stays that way. For me a longer and thicker handle would be better. keepem sharp

Got a Field Knife headed my way soon. I'll do my best to get a review up once I've used it a bit.
