Hello all, did anyone own the winkler 2 belt knife?
I don't like the factory edge so i change the blade profile to a convex edge with 12 degree angle on both side of the edge. However, i still find the blade is not as sharp as lauri blade that use the same 80crv2 steel? Is winkler knife forged made?

By “not as sharp” are you saying it won’t take a very good edge compared to the lauri? Seems like you took care of the winkler being too obtuse.

Two things could be the problem that come to my mind.

1) Heat treat issue.
2) Sharpening issue. Some knife and steel combinations I find extremely hard to get sharp. I can get a screaming edge on my hap40 delica but I cannot shelarpen a vg10 delica to save my life. It’s bizarre but true.

Have you tried stropping after you finish with the stones?
That gets rid of any wire edge you might have.

I don't have a Belt Knife but have the Winkler II Hunting Knife and Blue Ridge Hunter and they are thinned out a bit behind the edge and with a slightly convexed edge they are both great knifes ...

I didn't try to go anywhete near 12 degrees ... I'm not sure how that would work with the thick blade stock behind it ...

they are never going to be a chefs knife for slicing veggies they are heavy built knives but the two I have I'm very happy with.

Cause 80crv2 has high toughness as advertised , so i am confident that it won't chipp out easily even at 24 degree edge angle. I have lauri puukko at 15 degree included angle have no chipping issues on occasional batoning work.
I suspect that lauri blade has a better heat treatment and forging works on the steel than winkler knives using the same 80crv2 steel. As winkler himself admit the winkler 2 blade steel is a stock removal 80crv2. The level of hardness is not the same as lauri forged blade.
Or perhaps, winkler purposely lower the blade hardness to make a tougher knife to withstand the harsh use in the military field. If that is the case, then winkler knife is surely one of the toughest knife today.
But the strange thing is i find the winkler belt knife is difficult to sharpen than lauri blade. Can anyone give some explanations for that?

Lots of people struggle with sharpening. It's a learned skill, not a natural one.

Shotgun:
1) Heat treat issue.
It might of been a different steel but- There was a bad heat treat at 1 point. Someone reviewed a Winkler Belt Knife here on the Forums and it didn't seem right. Daniel Winkler joined the thread, asked for the knife back for testing and replaced it.

Reach out to Daniel Winkler and ask him.
