Winkler II knives

I know that Edwood has the Belt Knife because everytime I looked at it I wanted one! I finally emailed Daniel Winkler about making the Utility Knife I had asked about back in February. Got the email back the other day and the knife is on the books!

I asked for a change from the standard model and this was to have no top serrations. The picture I'm posting is from Daniels site and shows the serrations.

Those curly maple grips of Edwoods are really great looking and so I went with them. This wood is not stabilized though, but Daniel said that he treats the wood with beeswax. Hey Edwood, if you read this, have you had any problems with the curly maple, and do you treat the wood with anything?

Steel is 5160 and will have the standard Caswell finish, sorta gray in appearance. Blade is 4 7/8" long X .187" thick, and I really like the short clip point on this knife.

The kydex sheaths that come with these knives are something I've never seen before, but I like it! It is a kydex leather covered sheath. Curly maple comes with the brown leather, while the recycled rubber and black micarta come with black leather covered sheaths.

So my question is this; Who else here has a Winkler II knife/axe/hatchet, and how do you like it? Anyone have one with curly maple handles, if so, do you treat the handles with anything? For that matter, anyone have curly maple on any knife they have and treat it?

Both pics come from Daniel Winkler's website;

Btw, about 6 to 8 wk's for completion

And I find myself getting more fixed blades as time goes by......don't know why other than I like the designs of them. Course in the back of my mind I guess I'm preparing myself for the you know what...........ZOMBIE UPRISING!:eek::D

curly maple is very stable. Oil or wax will take care of it. I`m sure if you ever had a real problem Daniel would take care of it.

As to his knives: They are excellent knives but I`d only buy one on the secondary market... I have been looking for quite some time.... heh

I recommend you handle the knives if you can before you buy. I was in plaza cutlery last week and the had a good selection of Dan's blades. I always wanted a Winkler II belt knife but once I had it in hand I knew it wasn't for me. Although it was beautiful with top notch quality the handle was far too short for my hands. Also, the utility knife didn't work for me as the upper guard was in the way of my thumb.

On the bright side, the larger field knife, which wasn't on my radar, felt made for my hand and I will order one when funds permit.

The sheaths are great! They locked in solid and were well made. On the down side, the belt loop is screwed on and made ultra tight for secure weapons retention so you have to screw it on and off the belt. Hard to explain but I think I would rig something else up for non-tactical carry.

The handle materials are also very nice. However, in hand, I really liked the rubber handles. Very secure wet or dry and insulate superbly. Not pretty but you have to hold them to appreciate them.

Have fun!

Thanks petah for the info on the curly maple.

I really like the design on the hawks he does. I'm sure you will enjoy it!

Retzius, thanks for info on the knives, but I have no way of handling them before purchase. If it doesn't fit I'm sure I can get most of my money out of it. With the 4.75" handle it has I should be okay with it.

Keep it coming folks, I'm curious to know about these!

I'm excited for you brother, post some pics when she arrives. I'm curious to see what you think of the upper guard on the utility knife. It prevents you from putting your thumb on the top of the spine, other than that I thought the utility knife what superb.

If I could get the utility knife but with the top guard reshaped like the thumb ramp on the belt knife I would be a happy man. I bet Dan would mod it for you if doesn't work for you. He's responded to my emails very promptly and is a great guy.

Did Dan give you info on the SOF donor axe/tomahawk program? If you are at all thinking about getting one of his tomahawks email him for some info. You have the opportunity to get one of a kind team specific tomahawks AND donate one to your friendly neighborhood seal team :)

I have the belt knife with the curly maple handles. I love them! Very good grip. I have only had the knife for a few months so I have not treated the handles with anything yet. I'm very happy with the knife and I'm sure you will be also.

Friends,

If you need a little special modification let me know and I'll take care of it for you. As long it is not major there wont be any extra charge. These are all still custom so a little personalization is not too tough.

Also if anyone ever gets a piece and it doesn't fit or measure up in some way let me know and I'll trade it for something that will work for you. Or give you your money back, but thats no fun so I'll work with you and get what you need.

I have a Tec-Loc belt loop than will replace the standard screw on secure one. It runs an extra $25 and is interchangeable with all but the Utility Knife. That loop does not come off so it has to be one way or the other.

Daniel

Just got an email from Mr. Winkler letting me know that my Winkler II Utility Knife will be ready in the next few days, although it will be 2 weeks before I finalize and get it sent. Hoping to have it by 10/01/2011 so I can use it on a 2 day camping trip I'm going on that day.

Really psyched about getting this knife, especially after seeing Edwood's and reading about his use of the Winkler II Field Knife.:)
