I have a couple of winkler axes in 52100 and they work great. I was thinking of picking up a spike, and noticed that he is switching over to 80crv2. I can't find a lot of reliable info or reviews on this stuff. Anyone know where it falls on the toughness vs edge retention spectrum? Any more common steels that it can be compared to? I can probably still find one in 52100, how does 80crv2 compare to 52100?
(yes I have seen the failure thread, but my axe has taken a beating and is still in great shape)

I would suggest asking Daniel Winkler himself. He can answer precisely why he made the change.

I can just say that I have a belt knife in that steel and have been very pleased. Edge retention has been good and it's tough stuff. I've thinned out the edge and never had edge damage in the least. I sharpen it on my Lansky and a strop and it's a pleasure to sharpen. I mostly use SR101 from Swamp Rat and it seems like 80crv2 is in the ballpark.

Not scientific feedback, but something.
