I think here is a good place to explain about Winkler Knives II.
For the past few years I have been making axes and knives for some US Military Special Operation Teams. To do this both cost and time effectively I developed some new production techniques, new for me anyway. This allowed me to produce the knives and axes needed by these teams while still making my regular forged pieces. I bought some new equipment and rented a building to house this new operation. I still do most of the work myself but I do contract out waterjet cutting blanks, the heat treating on high tech steels like cpm3v and I have a part time helper that cuts out handle materials, sets pins, etches touchmarks, assembles sheaths, sweeps, non-skilled operations. I do the rest.
With my current Military contracts I spend about 60% of my time with WK II and the rest on my regular forged pieces. Setting up the new shop and production methods has been expensive. And as some of you know I have given most of the axes to the Teams at no cost with the help of some very generous friends. The Teams were willing to pay for the axes but regulations on discretionary spending limits how many and how quickly they would be able to get the axes in the hands of the men. I found a way to by-pass this with a donor program. Anyone that would like more information on the program can contact me directly. (Only the axes are part of the donor program, the knives have been a DOD purchase.)
Anyway, as these knives and axes found their way into the field, other military personnel not with the Teams contacted me about getting equipment for themselves. Since the Team designs are restricted I developed pieces that were similar, but open to purchase for whoever wanted one. Karen and I decided to make some designs available to the public as a way to help pay for the expense of developing this new stock removal product. The pieces on the Nordic web site are some of these pieces. We will make them available as long as time permits but there will be limits to availability depending on time and new Military contracts.

An Alternate Approach
To An Established Tradition
I realized early in my journey as a blademsith that I could do no better than to look to the tools that served the pioneers of this land for guidance and inspiration. Our Countrys early settlers faced harsh environments, personal combat and daily chores- their edged tools meant sustenance and survival. Nothing could be more tactical than the tools of the American Frontier. In recent years this premise has really been put to the test.
In 2007 I began providing equipment to two of our Nations most elite Military Special Operations Teams. According to my initial contacts, edged tools available to them at the time were not well suited to the new age of close quarter combat and survival. Over the past few I have worked directly with Team Members, developing items specifically for their use. It was quickly obvious that the precision inherent to the tools of an era past- basic utility that I had studied for more than twenty years- translated flawlessly to the needs of modern day warriors.
My preliminary involvement with United States Special Forces was making Team specific breaching/combat axes. I am currently providing four different models with additional projects pending. The proven performance of the axes in the field prompted the requisition of a standard issue belt knife within Naval Special Warfare, as well as the production of similar weapons for Allied Forces. These military projects mandated faster and less expensive production without compromising quality. The end result is Winkler Knives II, a stock removal division of Winkler Knives.
I am pleased to introduce the Winkler Knives II product line that is now available to the general public. The knives and axes posses attributes born of warriors experience, without compromising features specific to each Special Ops Team. Each piece is custom made in my shop. These are not kit products- only water jet cutting services, and occasionally heat-treating for high tech specialty steels, are outsourced. In place of the DWINKLER touchmark used to identify my forged work, all stock removal pieces coming from my shop bear the mark Winkler Knives II.
The steels used are all made in the USA and are proven performers. Handle material choices are the same as those specified by various SOF Teams. Sheaths and carriers are designs resulting from extensive field-testing by and feedback from active duty Team Members.
Winkler Knives II also has the capabilities to develop designs for groups or companies wanting their own private label or specialty cutlery. The process is readily applicable to traditional hunters and belt knives, as well as tactical styles. Minimum quantity for an exclusive model is twenty-five units. Turnaround time is typically four months or less after design approval.
