How does Karen Shook make the sheaths for Daniel Winkler? Is the leather shrunk over a wood sheath?

Karen uses a veg tan liner covered by rawhide.

You have to work rawhide wet (saturated but NOT sopping). Once sewn around the liner just let it air dry - it DOES NOT and should not be heat shrunk.

what about the belt loop? i can't figure out how to incorporate that into the covered sheath w/o a bulky mess.

I was lucky enough to get to spend a few hrs at Daniels place. He had loads of rawhide. She had that stuff streached over built up layers of leather but I do think I saw woodlike sheath structures. I wasnt paying attention but this is all I can recall. I do think there was wood in there somewhere?????? Hell..I think I just confused myself :o :D

Howdy -
The info I got about Karen's sheath was from Dana Acker and Josh BLount, both who have visited with Karen and Daniel. Karne may of course have changed or added wood to the mix.

Belt loops: Karen wraps rawhide around a vegtan core an sews it up with an inside center seam (again according to the above sources). This then is sewn to the rawhide cover, before sewing that around the core.

many thanks, chuck.

i don't want to copy shook's work, tho it is tempting. i wanted to understand it in order to go off in my own direction.

i do like working with rawhide - primarily cutting my own string so as to get the guage i want. also we make our own deer rawhide, beings it is quick and simple to do and again the results are what we want. not to mention cheap.

i don't feature working in rawhide for the primary scabbard leather, however. i want to use novelty prints over strap leather.

again, thanx (beautiful site, awesome work! and much enjoyed)

p.s. a dumb Q: i don't seem to find posts to this thread anywhere in the chronolgy on the posts in general - what is it i am not doing?
