In the market for a high-end axe or such. I had originally decided on a Hoffman but even though I was right on the forum for pre-order and kept clicking, all the pre-orders were mysteriously sold out. I've read some on Winkler's product and am interested in one of those now. Anyone here with recent experience & opinions? Anyone know how they are crafted (hand-forged or what)? Thanks.cwd

Winkler II blades and axes are made with stock removal. I have never owned one of his axes but I do have a few of their blades and they are great. I have batoned wet firewood with one and was really impressed at how well his 1080+/80crv held up and how durable the caswell finish he uses is. I would definitely recommend a Winkler Belt knife.
I have a few RMJs which used to be forged (pre 2018 Shrike). When I go camping or need a small axe for limbing, I leave the full tang stuff at home and bring 1.75-2 lb axe with a 20”+ hickory handle.

I have an RMJ/Bawidamann, Graham, Hardcore Hardware & few others. Have to say my favorite is my langet-style from walkbyfaith777. Bought one for myself & for brother's xmas present. Ordering process is really nice; get to choose from many different blade styles, hammer styles, finish & other things. If you want an odd length or other feature they're very accommodating. Mine is the middle right...Hawks.jpg

I wouldn't normally recommend them on this subforum, but you might also watch the Busse aftermarket. They've got a few tomahawk & hatchet offerings that are a bit cheaper than Winkler, but the same bulletproof quality & similar modern design. Whether made of SR-101 or INFI, they're gonna be basically indestructible tools that function rather nicely. I've got a Pork Chop hatchet that I just took camping, and it makes a great packable wood splitter to pair with a saw.

Can't go wrong with a Winkler. I have two axes and a few knives. The belt knife and an axe are always with me when I'm in the woods. I have a RMJ too but I like the Winklers a lot more.

Which axe are you interested in?

I have a small one and sincerly I’ll make it regrind because it will not cut hot butter. I Also carry a belt knife and it’s an excellent cutter. Looks like I was unlucky with my Hawk....
