Knives make good presents, right?

I visited my parents over thanksgiving and gifted my father with a Case amber bone CV canoe that had been gifted to me by a fellow forumite. In return my old man sent me home with these two knives that never get any pocket time from him. And being the purist carbon steel slippie junky that I am, they certainly won't see any pocket time from me. And it'd just seem wrong to hock 'em on the exchange.

With the holidays coming up I thought I'd do something a bit different for this giveaway. The stipulation for entering this one is that if you win one of these knives you have to give it away to someone! Keep the endless cycle of ridiculous generosity that is the spirit of the traditional forum going.

If you know someone that could appreciate (and preferably carry and use!) one of these knives please enter.

This is open to all regulars. Those outside the states, please join in, I'll ship wherever.

Specify which knife in your post you'd like a shot at. I'll pick two winners, one for each knife. Post as many times in the thread as you like, only your initial post counts as your entry.

Please make sure you have PMs or e-mail enabled so that I can contact you if you win.

In my previous giveaways I've used a random number generator, but this time I'll be hand selecting the winners with no particular criteria, possibly with the help of my girlfriend. So include something more than just an "I'm in". Be it a mention of the recipient for the knife you have in mind, a story, a purty picture, what-have-you. Just make it look like you're halfway trying ;)

Ah yeah the knives...

1.) KA-BAR Single blade Dog's Head Trapper

3 7/8" closed. KA-BAR's website has this lists the blade steel as 14-4CrMo (though other sites have it as 440C?). Covers are reclaimed American Chestnut purportedly from an old barn. Pretty sure Canal Street produced these for KA-BAR as they're identical to the Half Moon Trappers. Lightly used and carried, never sharpened, factory edge still pretty sharp. Very light pull on this one, maybe a 3. Blade rubs the liner a bit. Other than that, she's good to go, tight blade, snaps open and close.

2.) A.G. Russell Cartridge Lockback

I believe this one dates back to the 80s. 3 7/8" closed with a 2 5/8" cutting edge. Stainless blade (more than likely AUS-6A or AUS-8). Maroon canvas or linen micarta covers, I think A.G. calls it under the proprietary name coral rucarta? Lightly used and carried, factory edge has been lightly touched up but could afford to be thinned out in my opinion. No blade rubbing, smooth action, good snap, tight lock-up. Fit and finish is a bit eh cosmetically, but knife itself is solid. Quite stout for being as dressy as she is, has some real heft to her. Check them dovetailed bolsters!

Tough call, wish I had more knives to give out!

But after careful consideration...

1.) KA-BAR Single blade Dog's Head Trapper will be going to....
festerfromnzed

2.) A.G. Russell Cartridge Lockback goes to..... eisman

I'll let this one run until it loses steam (seems to be around the four or five day mark from previous experience) and announce the winners here.

Regards,
Jon

Very generous!
While I really like the looks of the Dog's Head Trapper, I can think of a couple different "younguns" that would appreciate the AG Russell lockback - and i would feel safer gifting the shorter, locking blade.

Great giveaway KLINEH....Its sunday morning here in NZ,and the spawn is looking over my shoulder at the knives you are gifting. He likes the Kabar as the shield looks like our Chessy...So if i won i would give the knife to him...thanks for the opportunity.....Here he is firing full blown 45 rounds tother day, perhaps a bit much for an 8 year old? but he enjoyed it immensely....thanks again............................FES

I think it'd make a fine knife for a youngun. The heft should make it hard to lose, your pants would become noticeably lighter were it to fall out :)

.45 perhaps a bit much indeed! Hah, timing of that picture is perfect. Eight was around the age my father introduced me to target shooting, fond memories. We had a bloodhound growing up, the dog's head shield reminds me of her as well.

Fantastic give-away, please let me step aside and not enter-but those are two GREAT knives, the dogs head Trapper is a beaut of a knife, and the AG RUSSELL is as always a beautiful knife - two real nice ones, theres going to be a couple of happy people at the end of this give-away - good luck everyone, and thank you for your awesome generosity Klineth - just great!

My next door neighbor's got terminal cancer and is wheelchair bound, but he's a major gun nut and that AG Russell would put a huge smile on his face. Count me in, and thanks!

Kind words, thanks Duncan! :)

Best wishes to your neighbor, I'm sure he'd be able to tell you what caliber the cartridge shield is. Reloading is my father's primary hobby and he was able tell me at first glance, but me being not too gun savvy, have already forgotten!

My friend, Don, has had some health problems lately (beat cancer and has had an unexplained relapse of some sort) and his grip isn't what it should be any more. He can't open my Hound's Tooth, at all (really more of a Spyderco guy, whom I've tried to convert). Either of these knives would serve him well and might show him the light. Let's give a gift together. He could use a surprise to brighten his day and I know he'd be touched by your gesture.

Great giveaway giveaway..thanks for the chance to give it away!

I have been considering getting my niece Makenna her first knife for Christmas. She's a great kid. Loves to hike and camp as well as playing softball. She also loves dogs and has two of her own. So, I think that the Ka-Bar Dogs head trapper would be perfect for her to take along on camping trips with the family etc.

Here she is at a recent softball game.

First off, thanks for the chance of this generous giveaway! I'm in for the Ag russell. Here's my little one Emma on our last trip to cabelas! Her favorite part of cabelas was the knife counter. She just stood and starred at all the beautiful knives! She may be a little young for her first knife but I could always put it in my display case until she became the right age.

Not an entry, but wanted to congratulate you on a very nice giveaway. You're going to make the winners very happy, and then whoever they ultimately give the knives to also. Well done.

Jon,
Congatulations on a GREAT GIVE AWAY, Your Generosity is Admirable.

THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY

I wish everyone GOOD LUCK and HOPE AND PRAY For Better Health For OUR Friend and Neighbor.
I enjoyed looking at the photos of our next generation.

I'm in. The AG Russell would be perfect for my buddy who's into reloading and firearms. Oh he would love it. Thanks for the chance.

im in, i know someone thats down on their luck and loves knives but cant afford any right now he'd love the A.G. Russell Cartridge Lockback

Wonderful idea sir, very generous  I'll throw my hat in the ring for the Ka-Bar. If I won it, I'd send it to Fes for his lad, who seems like a real chip off the old block :)

Jack

I would like to enter for the Kabar. I would love to gift it to my cousin whose lab closely resembles the shield, and who is not much longer for this world.

Like Fes son, mine lives for this stuff too. So I'm going to have to copy Fes and if I'm lucky on this one I will give it to my son. He likes the dog head trapper.
