Knives make good presents, right?
I visited my parents over thanksgiving and gifted my father with a Case amber bone CV canoe that had been gifted to me by a fellow forumite. In return my old man sent me home with these two knives that never get any pocket time from him. And being the purist carbon steel slippie junky that I am, they certainly won't see any pocket time from me. And it'd just seem wrong to hock 'em on the exchange.
With the holidays coming up I thought I'd do something a bit different for this giveaway. The stipulation for entering this one is that if you win one of these knives you have to give it away to someone! Keep the endless cycle of ridiculous generosity that is the spirit of the traditional forum going.
If you know someone that could appreciate (and preferably carry and use!) one of these knives please enter.
This is open to all regulars. Those outside the states, please join in, I'll ship wherever.
Specify which knife in your post you'd like a shot at. I'll pick two winners, one for each knife. Post as many times in the thread as you like, only your initial post counts as your entry.
Please make sure you have PMs or e-mail enabled so that I can contact you if you win.
In my previous giveaways I've used a random number generator, but this time I'll be hand selecting the winners with no particular criteria, possibly with the help of my girlfriend. So include something more than just an "I'm in". Be it a mention of the recipient for the knife you have in mind, a story, a purty picture, what-have-you. Just make it look like you're halfway trying
Ah yeah the knives...
1.) KA-BAR Single blade Dog's Head Trapper
3 7/8" closed. KA-BAR's website has this lists the blade steel as 14-4CrMo (though other sites have it as 440C?). Covers are reclaimed American Chestnut purportedly from an old barn. Pretty sure Canal Street produced these for KA-BAR as they're identical to the Half Moon Trappers. Lightly used and carried, never sharpened, factory edge still pretty sharp. Very light pull on this one, maybe a 3. Blade rubs the liner a bit. Other than that, she's good to go, tight blade, snaps open and close.
2.) A.G. Russell Cartridge Lockback
I believe this one dates back to the 80s. 3 7/8" closed with a 2 5/8" cutting edge. Stainless blade (more than likely AUS-6A or AUS-8). Maroon canvas or linen micarta covers, I think A.G. calls it under the proprietary name coral rucarta? Lightly used and carried, factory edge has been lightly touched up but could afford to be thinned out in my opinion. No blade rubbing, smooth action, good snap, tight lock-up. Fit and finish is a bit eh cosmetically, but knife itself is solid. Quite stout for being as dressy as she is, has some real heft to her. Check them dovetailed bolsters!
Tough call, wish I had more knives to give out!
But after careful consideration...
1.) KA-BAR Single blade Dog's Head Trapper will be going to....
festerfromnzed
2.) A.G. Russell Cartridge Lockback goes to..... eisman
I'll let this one run until it loses steam (seems to be around the four or five day mark from previous experience) and announce the winners here.
Regards,
Jon
