I have done giveaways at 1,000 and 2,000 posts, so it seems appropriate to do another at 3,000. With this post I am 40 away from that number, so this will remain open until I hit the triple K mark.

In the spirit of recent giveaways and discussions, here is what I'm going to do. You have seen all of my pocket knives at one time or another in the pictures I have posted. I don't have that many, but certainly more than I need. The winner (chosen by your post number in a random draw) can select one of my pocket knives as the prize. You don't have to indicate which knife you want in your post, but you may. The only one I am withholding is my Grandad's Schrade 708Y (for obvious reasons). If you happen to select one I have since sold or traded, I will let you know so you can pick another.

This is only open to regular participants in the Traditionals Forum, and here is how you enter (one entry per person, please). It may seem like bragging, but we're family here, and if you can't speak freely with your family, where can you?

Tell us about your most prized possession that you have given away, and what motivated your action. There is so much kindness and generosity here, it will be good to read about it and enjoy again one of the things that makes this little corner of the web so special.

Have given away knowledge on knives time and again to friends and family, and that is my most prized posession. Does that count? :D

Thanks for the opportunity :D

I have a friend (no names) from elementary school that i know to this day. He was playing a game one day and had an epileptic episode, which led to worsening of his condition including mild strokes, seizures etc. His medicines and treatment means that he cant really live a luxurious life, and therefore cant afford things for recreation (such as knives). I was going to college and working full time so it took me a while to save up, but i finally bought a $200 dollar knife as a gift to myself, and of course i had to show it to him being that hes also a knife-nut. When i saw the look on his face and how excited he was for ME, i immediately felt that there's no way in hell i was going to let life deprive him of such a little thing as a knife. It is now his and he loves it.

Anyway, whether you want to count me in as an entry is your choice, i just thought it felt so much more rewarding knowing how happy he'd be with it:thumbup: Congratulations on your 3k; i have only reached 300!

Hi Doug.
A neat idea for a give-away, I was "talking " to a forum friend behind the scenes the other day and he said that people who pass on threads -should actually enter, because the person who is doing the gifting is offering not only a knife but their gratitude towards other members and they want to share part of them - to us. I have said "not an entry......." because I have received so much from others here, but looking back now I see that was a mistake-although done on good thinking grounds, so.....
Could I please enter your contest Sir, it would be a pleasure, and one I would pay forward if I won....
I recently gave away my 2011 Bladeforums knife to our good mate Jack-he said to me in discussions that he had never owned yet a GEC knife, and this one I carried all the time, I of course carried others - but this was my mostly used knife -

When Jack said that to me, it bought back instantly a wee while ago when I said the very same thing, at that stage I hadn't owned a GEC knife-well Charlie sent me my beautiful Stag Serpentine Jack, and I will never forget that feeling, so I wanted Jack to feel exactly that, to receive his first GEC, and to feel just what I do when carrying that very knife.

Thanks for the competition Doug, and I look forward to reading others ( because there's lots of 'em here ) stories to gifting, thank you, and good luck to everyone here.

Back in 2001, I lost my Dad to cancer and my half sister came up from Florida for the funeral. I had just built myself a computer and when I found out that she didn't have one, I sent it to her. She just recently passed away being several years my elder, but this is probably the most expensive thing I've given away besides to my sons. At least of any real value that is. Growing up I didn't even know I had a half sister and never met her until this ugly time in our lives. I have always wondered what our relationship as sibling could have been had I known about her; I am somewhat saddened by the thought of what we missed, but we will catch up by and by.

Thanks for the give away and throw my name in the hat if you think my story worthwhile.

Ed J

I thought, if its within the confines of the rules, that i would use this post to submit Boggs as an entry. When my knife got stolen, he sent me a brand new GEC jack which is in my pocket as we speak. I know he would never enter by himself.

Shrapnel1, Boggs is a great guy - a real nice guy and thats a very deserving notion.

Ed my friend, I am sorry to read of your losses, Man - I bet your sister was Rapt when she received her computer!!!, she would have thought the world of you for that.

Wow Doug, very generous of you . A big congrats on 3000 posts my friend, I know I have enjoyed all the ones I have read(and knives I have seen ;) ). Never sat down and thought about things I have givin away. Usually its a golf club to a buddy who likes one or Ill give away knives to some of my coworkers. I donate time when I can and helped a good buddy years ago give his mom a surprise new kitchen. Helped him all I could and donated my labor on a stone countertop. I know its not much but I know she deserved it and it felt good to be a part of that project. Guess boy scouts worked lol, gotta thank my dad for that one.

DOUG...i would like to throw my hat in for this one Sir...The man in these photos has possession of my most prized thing?..He has made an oath to bring my son up (OUR WAY) should anything ever happen to me.. His own son was tragically killed,so now we share mine...As kind, considerate and caring as he is granite faced and tough...A priveledge to know and an honour to call him brother..My son is very lucky .. Not an entry and I'm not sure if I can include this as its not a knife but here goes.

My Old Man passed away in a plane crash when I was 15, he was on his way upstate NY with 5 other friends when the plane went down in Jersey. On the plane with my Old Man was my Savage lever action .308, well after the plane crash and investigation they returned the rifle, bent barrel and busted stock.

I've hung onto this piece of stock for week over 20 years, till I had to climb back on plane for the first time since the accident. As a result of a new job and career change found myself doing a lot of world traveling and the first trip was the worst, they had to tranquilize me in order to get me on the plane.

As a result of my first trip since the accident I was besides myself every time after that I had to fly. Medicating me wasn't the answer so one day while going through some stuff in the basement I found the piece of stock from the crash and I had an idea, an irrational one but an idea nonetheless.

I cut a piece of the stock off and drilled a hole in it and put a keyring through the hole. My rationale k was that the piece of wood has already been in a fatal plane crash once so the odds that it would be in two in a row was pretty small, that was enough to keep me reasonably calm while flying. It worked, 5 years of being on the road 3 weeks a month and the planes never crashed. Hey it worked for me. :)

Fast forward a few years and my Mom had to fly to Hungary because her mom at 92 was sick and dying, my mom wanted to be there for her mom but she hadn't been on a plane since the year the Old Man died.

She was distraught because she wanted to go but was terrified at the thought so I sat her down and told her the story about the piece of gun stock, what I did to it and what my rationale was. I have her my good luck charm and drove her to the airport the following week and put her on a plane to Hungary, she got to see her mother and was actually they're with her when she passed away.

That meant the world to her and she so grateful that I have it to her, she still carries it on her purse to this day.

The two other things I was able to pick up at the crash site, his two hunting knives that we always took on or trips upstate, an Edgemark Buffalo Skinner Bowie and a stag handled drop point Skinner of unknown German origin.

Thanks for the opportunity to tell this story, it's been awhile since I'd thought about it and good luck to all who enter.

I have away my first case knife to my best friend. A John deer "magician" style stockman. Beautiful knife....

I had just finally built my camera collection to a completion of two bodies and every lens I would ever need. My brother told me the old camera I gave him was not doing well from all the time on the ocean. I wrapped up my Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 17-55 2.8 lense and drove it from MD to Miami and handed it to him.

Thanks for doing this, Doug.

Kevin

I gave my brother my Kershaw Rake (I know, it's not a traditional, please don't kill me) after his cheap knife closed on him, and nearly severed his finger. It may not seem like much, but that was the second knife I ever bought, so it was a little hard for me to do. I also gave my other brother in college my SLR, so that he could pursue his photography mini dream. That camera was been with me for years, before I gave it to him. He still uses it, and he loves taking pictures, whenever he can.

As for the knife. Surprise me, I like surprises.

it wasnt a give-away but i once threw a pair of boots to which i was very attached onto a fire. sometimes life and circumstance requires that you make a sacrifice that is more than just symbolic.
not an entry, but this is a great contest idea!

Not an entry and I'm not sure if I can include this as its not a knife but here goes.

Your story does not have to be knife related.

I have have been moved deeply by the stories told so far. This already far exceeds what I had hoped would come of it.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, and keep them coming.

Thanks for the chance Doug. My gift has been to my son, items from my Dad that I learned many things of my former profession that I excelled in. I remember learning to shoot a revolver at the age of 10. Not only my son has benefitted but my nephew and nephew -in-law. Thanks again for the chance...Herb

I gave away my Zero Tolerance 0551. I gave it to my brother-in-law for a number of reasons. He was just starting to get into knives and l I wanted to introduce him to a knife that fully embodied the idiom of you get what you pay for. ZT knives aren't relatively expensive but are of the highest quality blades available.

By the way, thank you for this opportunity to WIN!

Doug that is kind give away letting the winner choose whatever he like (except one), the generosity here never stop to amaze me.

I collect Japanese sword and sword guards (tsuba), and I gave three of my friends a tsuba from my collection in three different occasions, no special reason, just because I felt like giving away would be the right thing to do.

Congrats on 3K!
Mike
