took a little trip into the Elkhorns
pulk packed and ready to go
headed up
few stream crossings, lower the creeks were running which was a little bit of a surprise
start of a snow trench
layering the roof, used two cut open contractor bags, should have used one of my tarps- where the bags overlapped the snow would find it's way in- would do in a pinch, but a tarp would have been better
home, sweet home
fell a small snag and bucked it up w/ the Silky Pocket Boy
knife pron, my BHK Boattail
melting snow for water and getting supper going w/ the MSR WindPro (use the canister inverted), home made titanium heat exchanger on a Titan pot
view from the patio
rousing fire
peaceful night, the only life I saw (tracks actually) were a lone moose and a bobcat, other than that, had the whole place to myself
snug as a bug
used the sled as a door
woke up at five to the sound of rain, it was 20 degrees and dropping when I went to bed
rain in the mountains in winter is never a good thing; while I was fine in my bivy the rain was percolating through the roof and finding the seam of the overlapping contractor bags, as it was barely light I hastily packed up and started off the mountain; of course about half way down it started breaking up
tried out my new SPOT- wife got my message (email and text), it also showed on a map where it was sent from- pretty neat; also I rigged my lumbar pack w/ a shoulder harness from Mountainsmith- definitely helps w/ pulling the pulk
while cut short, still a great trip!
