took a little trip into the Elkhorns

pulk packed and ready to go

few stream crossings, lower the creeks were running which was a little bit of a surprise

start of a snow trench

layering the roof, used two cut open contractor bags, should have used one of my tarps- where the bags overlapped the snow would find it's way in- would do in a pinch, but a tarp would have been better

home, sweet home :D

peaceful night, the only life I saw (tracks actually) were a lone moose and a bobcat, other than that, had the whole place to myself

snug as a bug

used the sled as a door

woke up at five to the sound of rain, it was 20 degrees and dropping when I went to bed

rain in the mountains in winter is never a good thing; while I was fine in my bivy the rain was percolating through the roof and finding the seam of the overlapping contractor bags, as it was barely light I hastily packed up and started off the mountain; of course about half way down it started breaking up

tried out my new SPOT- wife got my message (email and text), it also showed on a map where it was sent from- pretty neat; also I rigged my lumbar pack w/ a shoulder harness from Mountainsmith- definitely helps w/ pulling the pulk

while cut short, still a great trip!

Looks like a great time!!! You struck a really nice balance of traditional and modern winter camping - an unusual thing these days...

I'm always conflicted when going out in the winter as I rarely use traditional techniques. I'm so used to modern stoves, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, tents (I've never bonded well with bivy sacks) that nowadays I'd usually rather not bother with a fire and risk burning a hole in my spendy down puffy parka or g-tex bibs.

Looks awesome!
Would love to go to the mountains one day...any mountain!
But yours look particularly nice!
Thanks for sharing, love the pics and seeing people out and camping all year!

Looks like you're living it up, mtwarden... and in the woods and snow is even better!

Thanks for sharing - we love this stuff.

Wonderful trip!

And you are right about knife pron, my BHK Boattail
Love that knife, it has such style

thanks gents!

fmajor- yup, definitely a blend of old and new- kind of fun :)

neeman- gotta love the Boattail, it's a dandy- shame neither Battlehorse or LT Wright makes it now
