This is my first official give away inside the Becker sub. This GAW serves two purposes.

1. It celebrates me coming up on 5K posts in the BFC.
2. It celebrates my recent acquisition of a BK4 Machax, freely gifted to me by 1066Vik (Thanks Erik!!)

Erik recognized my need and gladly offered his unused BK4 to me. Actually, I think he offered it to me just so I’d quit whining about not having one…haha. Anyway, Erik would not accept my BK7 for a trade, so I suggested a Give Away here as a way to pay his generosity forward. He agreed and suggested the below contest requirements. It is open to anyone who owns a Becker knife and takes the time to complete the task(s) and submit an entry. It is open internationally as well, as long as the knife is legal to ship to and as long as you can possess it in your country. Shipping costs outside the US will have to be determined and will be paid by me, or me and Erik.

Here is the Contest.

Post your most recent camp excursion where you used a Becker knife in the construction of your camp. Winter is especially harsh in some areas and particularly challenging, so it would be great to see how well you survived using your Becker knife/knives. Documentation is key here, and you must prove you completed the tasks between the dates specified below.

Contest dates: Between 12/22/2015 and 2/29/2016. NOTE: If you posted a thread in the Becker sub of a winter campout that took place between the dates specified, then you can submit a link to your thread here and that will count as a submission. I would not require you to do a second one just for this contest. The only requirements are they must be winter camps. Also, you can submit as many camp outs you like for consideration, as long as they are different excursions and take place within the contest dates. Please try your best to include photos with a time date stamp or some other way to prove your camp is recent. :D

Pics with scenery showing the harsh environment you are in, your Becker knives, the results of your hard work and date and time stamps will be eligible entries. A winner will be chosen by judgement, after the contest end date, so it is in your best interest to fully digitally document and upload your excursion in its entirety. Shelter builds, fire builds, food prep, the creation of creature comforts and other survival necessities are all good to go. The more complex your camp, or the more extreme the environment, the better chance you have to win….if you survive, haha. You do not have to go all Jeremiah Johnson on us, as the use of modern tools and devices are acceptable/encouraged (ie cook stoves, fire starters, flashlights, etc etc are all ok) but please try to use your Becker knife as much as possible.;)

The goal here is for you to test/show us your skills in a real-time uncomfortable/crappy environment! Rain and Snow will score second looks for sure. ;)

Just so I’m not alienating our fellow Becker users in warmer climates, as long as you guys can document the winter camp was completed within the contest dates, your entry will be considered (yes, just a fairly as the winter ones, haha).

Please use a safety mindset in your campsite selection and prep and in your documentation methods. Please use safe judgement as well while looking for things to make your camp out better. Taking a selfie while hanging over a cliff to collect mushrooms from a cliff outcropping…...is totally awesome!! But it will not demonstrate to us you have a survival mindset. I do not want to be contacted by your next of kin, blaming me for any misfortune you may encounter because you were an idiot.:D

That's it. Show that it sucked, and what you did to make it not suck!

Here is a pic of the BK7 Combat Utility Knife you are competing for.

Damn, my last trip almost qualifies... I guess I'll have to try again under worse conditions... with less comforts from home...

I am more of a backpacker so there isn't much camp setup in the winter. Mostly just a tent and a maybe a small fire and I usually only process enough wood for my little Solo stove. It is tough to get my winter pack under 50 pounds (which is important since I am only about 145lbs) if I am going for multiple nights so I just bring the bk14 and a SAK most of the time. I think that is a bit different than how most of you do it. I'll try to take some pics anyway.

I am trying to do an overnight backcountry ice fishing trip so if I find the time for that I'll take some pics.

A buddy of mine has a wife who says that she only stays in five star hotels. In fact, she says that if the hotel is rated less than five full stars or the bell hop doesn't wear a bow tie ... it's camping!

Lemme see if I can get a Becker Knife pic in the mix somehow!

so you're saying it happened after 12/22 (i.e. over Christmas break)?
if only there was a picture with a time/date stamp in there..... :D
OTOH, this is good incentive for you and the munchkin to go hang out in the woods some more.

Yea that was two weeks ago and I like the way you think :D

One of the more underrated skills for any survival situation is building traps. They are at work even if you are asleep and a mental time killer. This will be hard to replicate in winter conditions but I might give it a go for the contest. It's called the Deliverance Deadfall.

Consider post number 8 an official submission If you'd like MadIndian. Your integrity is not in question here, as the thread was created without future knowledge and does have elements of the contest requirements. Or you can do another one like Erik said. After all, I did not specify one entry only. Haha. I just assumed people would only do it once.
Perhaps I should modify the rules to include already posted outings that take place within the contest dates, ruling legitimacy based on lack of future knowledge.
Man I sound like a damn contract lawyer....I got to go to bed. I'll modify it in the morning.

Traps are good, but survival shelters and traps is better. Remember "the more complex your camp....." Yea?

I've got a tentative trip planned 2nd weekend of Feb, I'll make a 2nd entry... and if I can talk the wife into letting me go this weekend too maybe I'll do 3 :D

Thanks for the opportunity too btw

Back yard camping counts? JKD , that's a very generous GAW from you guys and a perfect incentive to get us into the woods , good luck to the participants !!!😎😎😎

My backyard is 2 acres surrounded by more woods...no neighbors can be seen.

As long as your pics didn't have your house in the background, I would have never known, haha

To ALL: Go out to the woods/forest/hinterlands/extended acreage/immense backyards/yonder, build some Shelters, fires and brave the elements. :D
