Got a little snow here today - first snow of the season, 3" to 6" - a "blizzard" for around here (LOL)
(We're from New Hampshire) been here 6 years now. LOVE it ! Should have moved here 40 years ago.

Anyway - On a whim, grabbed my coat, couple beers, backpack, the dogs and headed out to the camp site.
No planning. Just went with what I had in the daily backpack. See if I could give it a go with what I had.
It's nice to plan and bring all the right gear, but as Moose says, sometimes "ya gotta' dance with what you brung"
(I paraphrase)

Campsite - snowy and wet

I'd love to tell you I stared the fire with a bow drill, but I didn't. I always carry a bic, matches, newspaper and lint from the dryer (wife thinks I'm nuts)
(got a fire steel in there somewhere too. just in case)

Dogs did NOT help. Almost pushed the damn ball through the fire and put it out (LOL)

Now, I'm not a big "battoning" guy. I usually use a hatchet and folding saw - but today ... glad I knew how and COULD batton. Everything was wet and had to get to the inside for some dry wood. The 7 is ALWAYS with me and did a good job.

One of the other things I always carry is a nip (or 2) For "medicinal purposes" :D

As the day wore on, got some more snow.

Happy to report, the lean too is still working great. Warm and dry inside.

Great pics! Looks like a good time! We didn't get any snow up in my part of VA...

Yeah - no snow here this year either (I'm NOT complaining)

60 and sunny yesterday, 50 tomm., 65 end of the week - "blizzard" today ... too funny

You lucky dog you. Snow? What the hell is that? We had one snow here this year, if you wanna call it that. I'm a winter person, and so is my wife. We love the snow.

Great pics... where in Virginia? Heard you folks were gettin' hit, but didn't know how much.

Sometimes those little random trips outdoors turn out to be alot of fun. Looks like you had a good time in the snow. "Nips" are nice in cold weather.

Nice shots man, and I think its great that you just took off with what you had in your bag. I'll have to try that sometime.

And is that a blue merle Aussie that I'm seeing in there? Had an Aussie for years, great dogs :).

She's an 8 y/o Border Collie - (same thing only different) She's nuts. Vet called her O.C.D. - stare and play with that ball for hours - but yeah, GREAT dogs.

We have an 11 y/o Aussie too. Brown.

And a 3 y/o Dobby/Rotty cross named Chaos. (well named - trust me) Unbelievable dog in the woods. Almost keep up with deer.

Looks like fun. Your camp looks different with the snow all over it. It started raining here in southern middle Tennessee yesterday morning then around 9:00a.m. it began to snow large wet flakes. No accumulation but it sure was purdy. I didn't get to out to the woods but did get to check a couple traps on the river. No dogs, beers or medicinal hooch.

Hey Cobra.....

Great Post.....Love the pix....That's quite a mixed pack......Susan and I have a mongrel of pups too......A feist, a Boston, A piston and a (we think) Jack-beagle mix....Do love them dogs.....

Snow sure cleans a campsite up....lol...All looks good.....

All Best...

Ok, fantastic post.

I love it, and great pics too.

Just so's you know, I'm jealous. :D

A couple of weeks ago, I was helping out with a bushcraft class, and I was showing off a bow drill and flint and steel. After the show and tell, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE started fishing in their pockets to make sure they had a lighter.

Hell yeah.

Some of the best times I can remember are with me in the woods with my dog(s). Some of the best wilderness companions, IMO. Great pics! Thanks for sharing!

Hey ya'll - Thanks for the kind words and some high praise. Do appreciate it.

Glad you enjoyed.

Was a fun day.
