I was able to get out late this afternoon with JeffS1 from the board and get in some scouting for next years deer season as well as practice a little fire making in damp conditions. These pictures were taken on State land not far fromout homes.

This is a picture of Jeff crossing one of the foot bridges on the way into the woods. We only had a couple of inches of snow on the ground.

This is a pretty cool fire pit/chimney we found in the woods. We did not light a fire in it but maybe on the next trip out.

With a little bit of work I'm sure this downed tree could be made into a usable shelter.

This swamp had a ton of deer sign and had a nice hill over looking it that we may set up on during next years slug season.

The swamp pictured above was also loaded with a lot of downed trees from beavers.

Notice the chewed up bark on the 2 trees

I busted out my MSR pocket rocket and titanium kettle to get some hot chocolate going while Jeff worked on getting a fire going with a fire steel and tinder found on site.

I was actually surprised that the tinder was able to catch a spark as it was very damp out. It's reassuring to know that a fire can be made with just a fire steel and some thin bark and small branches though.

Thanks for getting those pics up Mike! Today was a blast & my legs will be screaming tomorrow. :D

That firpit looks real familiar... Are you in Roxbury? Anyway, great pics!

Looks like a great day. How do you like your BH Bushcrafter? I've been considering one. Thanks for sharing.

great pics man... nice BHK bushcrafter...:)

once again, makes me wish it would snow like that here...:o

Jeff will have to chime in on the Bushcrafter as it is his blade. The rat 6 was the balde I brought along.

I actually like the BHK Bushcrafter a GREAT deal. I love the blade shape and the grip shape. It throws sparks from my LMF steel like there's no tomorrow. The only thing that tweaks me, is that the scales shrunk a bit and revealed a somewhat sharp edge along the grip surface. Other than that the knife rocks and the sheath is just fine.

Jeff S1, Keeping the handle lubed up with mineral oil may bring it back. I have had similar issues with wood handled knives and this has helped.

Thanks for the input. Looks like a great time was had by all.
