ive been planned to go on (read:volunteered) to go out this saturday on a winter hike event dragging a sled around with my boyscout troop and its supposed to be like below 30 and i need to have a high carb meal for lunch and breakfast i need to be able to make the lunch with boiling water i was thinking ramen with somethin extra put in any other ideas? and breakfast will be made at home any ideas for that?

Drop a few bucks for some Mountain House freeze dried gormet meals and wow them. Be sure to get the large packets because they'll all want a taste. Tetrazinni is good. Ramen noodles are ok, but they just don't fill me up like a thick, hot bowl of Mountain House. As for breakfast prepared at home, a thermos of hot water, cup, spoon and bowl for spiced instant oatmeal and hot cocoa. Or hot instant apple cider if you prefer. Be sure to carry some jerkey and gorp in your pocket to munch. You'll have them eating out of your hand. Literally.

Instant Oatmeal Can Also Be Eaten For Lunch(dessert)-pick A Flavor You Really Like.

Put Cashews And Other Nuts Into Your Ramen As Well As Torn Up Peices Of Pita Bread..

Walk Up And Down The Grocery Store Aisle And See What You Can Bring At Only Needs Hot Water To Make Ready To Eat

You're Bound To Find A Lot More Than You Think

Let Us Know How The Trip Goes

Nothing like a load of Spagetti in my opinion. It'll be a short hike so the weight shouldn't be a factor.

On short overnight trips when weight isn't a factor, I always bring a can of chef boyardee spaghetti with meatballs. It just tastes good for me when I'm out there. I also like ramen noodles especially if I'm trying to save weight. Try the Maruchan beef flavor you get at the grocery for like 10 cents and add some freeze dried chicken. It's pretty darn good. I actually eat this at home except I use fresh chicken and add some cayenne pepper. yummeeee:D

Nothing like a hot cup of ramen! I could live off that...

...oh wait, I did...and caught a horrible stomach flu!

i cant eat oatmeal but i got a mountain house 16oz bag when its hydrated beef stroganoff

That is another favorite of mine! Add the water just a bit hotter, let is sit a bit longer, it makes a bit more! Ya done good!

There are other instant breakfast foods. Malto-meal is another.

Even breakfast sandwiches. Bacon/egg/cheese/English muffin is good. Like a home made egg McMuffin. Pretty filling too if you pile it on.

Normally I can't eat oatmeal. But get me up on the trail, hungry and tired and cold, and I'm good for a cup or five. :)

Hmmmm... oatmeal is funny stuff. I loved it when I was a little kid, hated it when I was in my twenties, and now I like it again in my forties. ajcz, you might also want to check out the "breakfast bars" at the grocery, some of them pack a lot of food value in a small, tasty, individually wrapped package.

If you cant deal with oat meal I would Say just try to make it hot and plentiful, Home made or microwave breakfast sandwiches, Can be heated at home and packed in a cooler to keep warm.

Try your favorite cold cerial, with warm milk instead.

trail Mix or GORP is always good for a mid day energy boost. grocery stores and Walmarts carry a few varieties.

For a hot Lunch I would Go withthe moutain house Meal they are really filling. and walmart now carries them in limited varieties.

Make sure you bring you own stove, Don't rely on someone else to provide it. bring an EZbit or at least some sterno if you have nothing else.

And of course a cup or pot to heat water in

Enjoy the Derby

You cant hack oatmeal, then have pancakes. These stay in my gut for a fair while on a cold winter hike, and I do that quite frequently. Only one Ptarmagan today while bird hunting. Basicly have a gut sticker breakfast then bring a couple of substantial sandwiches and kit for a hot drink to go with them (or thermos of tea, coffee). Pour boiling water in your thermos and let it sit for 10 minutes, then pour it out and add your hot drink. Preheating a thermos gives you longer heat retention for your fluid. You will probably be tired and half frozen by lunch. Its easier to just heat a hot drink and slam down the sandwhiches. Wear layered clothing with thin wind pants between the layers, with a sandwiched wool shirt or sweater up top. You will be warmer in bush and trees than out in the open. Anti-fog for your glasses if you wear them, is a damn handy item at minus 30-40. When the snow is crunchy (ULTRA COLD) make sure that you have minimum exposed skin on your face. After about 15-20 minutes I can tell if Ill be ok or not. If I am still warm I continue my hunt, If Im getting cold on in my extremities and it wont go away (after 15-20), I will head back and dress warmer or stay home. I stay tuned to what my body is telling me and dont push it.

upnorth, you're making this old Minnesota boy sort of homesick.

Dang I miss the winter.

Bagels, oatmeal, butter, nuts, peanut butter, cheese. Coffee, tea, sugar.

Tuna, peperoni, jerkey, decent soup mix (lipton soupworks), pasta, spices

Trail mix, dried fruit, chocolate.

Premix flour or a bisquick bisquit mix

Good to go, Lots of fats and proteins with your carbs for winter is the rule. No time for a diet! Get creative, cheese and peperoni inside a baked bisquit over the fire is to die for.

If you go the Ramen (or any pasta derivative) route, make sure you bring SOME protein with you. I have found that adding some animal makes a good "fuel for the furnace" for lasting warmth. I order jerky from this guy (I have no connection to this website other than being a VERY VERY pleased customer, to the point where I would call myself a friend, and we both like good cigars) hillbillysteaks.com Get some...you will NOT be disappointed!
Even on a dayhike in the winter, I make sure to have a good warm lunch. Recetnly, in the alpine zone, me and hiking buddies stopped, he ehated some tea and had crackers, etc, I had a bowl of mountain house seafood chowder. Man, did I enjoy my lunch more than he did!!!

Good point Smokelaw, Most Grocery stores carry tuna / salmon or chicken that is "canned" in a foil lined bag. Adding these to the endless dried potato / rice / pasta boxed side dishes that are usually just across the aisle makes for variable choices of meals. Be sure to read the directions on the back of the boxes though. many require butter or milk and if you don't have those things with you, stuff can taste kind of funny. Look for ones that just need water if carrying the other additives is an issue. Most can be cooked in a single pot. Yum. Just like Mom makes.

Hey GUys...

Don't forget the Pepperoni sticks!! or dry salami...
Vacume packed tuna is also Great...

Adding Critter to most anything will make it better!

For me nothing beats a fresh bagel . When i go backpacking i like to take with me few bagels, i eat them with some russian sasauge and cheese. Another version would be bagel with some cheese and dried fruits. It keeps me going for the all day. But the best way is bagel with cream cheese and lux( smoked salomon) on top it goes great with a cup of tea or orange juice.
