Here is some pics of the last 2 days. The first day(sunday 1/23) It was me and my lil bro @ Summit Lake State Park. I didn't get a lot of pics because the camera was going dead.

The second day(monday 1/24). It was me and my 4yr daughter in my back yard. We were out for about an hour and half. It was a great time and she had a blast!

When we scared the Blue Herron it flew right over and sat next to an ice fishermen. It just sat about 25 yards for the guy and watched him fish. It was funny.

My HEST and my meager fire kit. I actually tried to start a fire in the fire pit and didn't succeed.

Getting wood for the fire

This was/is my first successful attempt of a fire with just a firesteel and my fire "kit". I feel I coulda made a good size fire with what I had going. I used some fatwood and dryer lint. I was proud of myself for a small step.

I hope everyone enjoys my pics because I enjoyed both days! I have a few more pics but I think you can understand what went on.

Thanks for looking!!

Great stuff, I love that Heron in flight pic !

One little suggestion for ya is to wrap your matches in some waxed paper. Not only does it help keep the matches dry but it is also extra emergency tinder to help start a fire !
Not sure if you have any inner tube in there or around the tin but that also comes in handy for firestarting especially in the wet.

Keep the pics coming buddy !

Sweet! I would have never thought to wrap them in wax paper. And I really like the inner tube thing! I wanted a way to keep the tim closed but I wasn't for sure what would work best.

I have always enjoyed hiking but I am just now getting into longer hikes with more gear. I learned alot about fire starting with a firesteel today and yesterday. My kit is pretty simple but I think it would be effective. BUT I love constructive criticism.

Thanks Pit!

awesome pics, man! way to go starting your daughter on loving the outdoors nice and early too
