Yep...Thats how it is....brown, blah and also wet....

At least the dogs are enjoying it. My oldest dog, Beta, is having a harder time in the snow these days. Back in Jan, I had to put her in my coat after she started to get hypothermic. Mind you, the damn lass managed to find every thin ice and puddle to wet herself completely down.

I had my little Bruce Culberson EDC (the guy who kicked ass on the W&SS bushcrafter knife challenge).....Damn, this is a sweet little blade!

Being lazy today, I made my coffee using a trangia stove. But I learned this kick-ass trick from the internets for making a simple pot base. Just add three nails into the burner to make a pot base. Works like a charm! Simple and effective. Note you do need to have work gloves to remove the nails and snuff the flame if you plan on keep any remaining fuel in your burner.

Here is an older shot demonstrating the concept....

Had to tie the dogs while trying to enjoy my coffee for all the deer running around....

Anyhow, a nice little walk with the dogs. I will be doing a another Puzzle Lake run this upcoming Friday-Monday with Joe for some winter bushcraft. Can't wait!

Cool idea with the nails. Ya it has been a crumby winter so far. No skiing for me :(

That is a lovely knife, what kind of wood are the handles made out of?

Your coffee mug on the burner reminded me of the bush buddy, even though they are totally different..

I really want to make/buy one of these for the longer camping trips.

Thanks! The handle is walnut and the blade is 1070 (1/8th in stock with a very aggressive flat grind). Pot is just your regular SS-bottle cup that nests overtop a nalgene. Ghetto lid (as Normark calls it) is from a food tin cut with the side-style-can opener. It will actually snap to the rim if you work it. The nifty 3-nail tip is pretty cool, but I learned the idea from a neat little youtube video from elsewhere.

I really like that knife that Bruce made. One of these days I should get one from him that isn't a big chopper. Same blade with micarta would suit me well, I believe.

That trick with the nails is pretty spiffy... going to have to use that idea.

I thought from the thread title there was going to be a poem or at least a haiku. What rhymes with turd....?
Great pics with happy pups are good too!

Awesome pics Ken, looks like a fun outing! That is a sweet looking little knife. I'm starting to wonder if you're color blind though...I see greens, golds, beige, grey, white, silver, and brown. You don't really need gloves, they just help...I've made more than one pair of improvised tongs while out in the woods.

I am impressed. Nicely done.
.

Thanks!

Improvised thongs??????? Perhaps from grapevine ????? : D :D :D Thanks for your reply buddy!

ha, you got that right. warm and wet or cold and snowy i like, but cold/wet/brown i hate. i don't remember a winter without snow like this one at all. i bet all the kids are hating it too since no classes are canceled, haha.

Great pics. I understand what you mean about a brown winter. We had our first snow of the winter Sunday, about 7 inches. We took advantage of a day off of work and went for a hike in the snow Monday morning. By that evening there was only traces of snow left due to the 50+ degree day.

Thanks!

Take a green stick, carve at the middle over half the diameter for about 3 or 4 inches, and keep the carving symmetrical. The type of wood will let you know how deep you need to carve :) Heat that area and bend.

Great pics Ken. I am really looking forward to your trip report and really wish I could have made this one.

Take care,
B
