Hey guys. I'm looking for a three in one type jacket. Something thinner than my cabelas jacket, but something i can wear in the rain, snow. Waterproof, warm. I've looked at columbia, north face and cabelas but have no idea what to look for. And don't have any of them in my area. Price under 250. Any other questions feel free to ask!

What region are you in? How cold are we talking? Winter coat for the cold has completely different meanings depending on where you live. There are lots of options. Personally I like a layered system until it gets below 20 degrees, then I break out the down.

I live on the shoreline in Connecticut. Ordering online was the way that I was going to go. I paid a decent dollar for my cabelas jacket which I'll wear if mobility isn't such an issue. I don't think I'll ever need down.

Mountain Hardwear makes great stuff. Are you looking for a shell or a stand alone jacket?

For a standalone I used to own a Duluth Whaleback and it was a great coat I have since shifted to a layered system so I just use a wind and water proof softshell as my outer layer when the temps drop.

I'm looking for something that I can go hiking in. Be comfortable driving. But if I get hot at a camp site I can shed the shell and wear the inner jacket.

The jacket I wear for the weather here in Ohio is a fleece lined softshell. If I need more warmth I simply add a wool base layer.

I usually wear a fleece lined Columbia softshell. If the weather gets too cold for that I add a Columbia fleece under that. That is usually good to about 20 degrees. Colder than that and it's time for goose down.

Nobody has mentioned Carhartt, but they make a wide variety of coats and jackets. I would look over their site and see if something grabs you.

Which would be better to buy for 40° and up, 200g or 300g insulation?

200g for me. There are variables to consider, of course. Things like do you plan to be active in jacket? Will you be waiting for a train?

If I expect to be active, I go with a lighter jacket, otherwise I end up sweating, and that's a no-no, even in 40 degree weather.
