Winter Knives? What do you switch to?

Does anyone change their carry habits during the winter months to account for heavy coats, etc?

Knives clipped to a pocket can be hard to get to with heavy clothes on, and even harder if you have gloves on.

The only thing I really do differently is carry a large CRKT M16-04 steel-handle tanto in my leather jacket pocket without the clip. I picked that one because the flipper is easy with gloves and it's a pretty heavy knife which will stay put in my pocket when I toss my jacket over a chair in a bar or something.

This year I might carry a neck knife more often. I figure it's easy to get to through buttons on a flanel shirt or I can carry it outside my shirt if I have a jacket on.

I might also carry my Benchmade AFO auto because it's got a big, bulky handle and the button doesn't have a ridge around it so it's pretty easy to hit.

As far as defense goes, I think serrated knives are out because serrations tend to get caught up and stuck in soft materials.

My EDC does tend to change from summer to winter:
In the summer I carry smaller, lighter pieces (Spyderco Navigator, Surefire E1e) but during the winter, like you suggest, I switch to a larger EDC (Spyderco Endura and Surefire E2e + KL1)

It's very autumnal here so I'm transitional :D

I've been carrying my CRKT M-1 this summer because I can clip it inside my waistband and with my shirts tucked in you really can't see it. Now that winter's here I'll start wearing my Gene Ingram fixed blade. The longer shirts and coats will keep it concealed.

I'll continue carrying my Gerber AR 3.25 combo, but in the summer I usually carry my Explorer too. I'm not outside as much, so I may downgrade to the Tinker. But, one aspect people here have missed, is that Winter=Christmas, Christmas=Presents, Presents=Knife possibilities, and Oh how I would love opening my other presents after finding a Sebbie under the tree...

I go for the ones built like bricks in the winter, because gloves can be tricky for a good grip. I carry a Buck Strider drop point, or a Spyderco Chinook.

I am not going to change, I have been carrying my Benchmade 943 all summer and I am going to continue to carry it.

Aaahh, winter... the "fixed blade season". :D

Let´s see now. Might be time to carry that nice Temperance I´ve been fondling all summer or why not carry something a wee bit bigger, like the Retribution... then again going for the mucho-macho Busse Battle Mistress would be great. Umpteen inches of INFI for peeling those thick skinned oranges ;)

Nah, I´ll settle with the Temperance and maybe carry my Perrin a bit more often. :)

I add my Buck Taclite in winter. with the G-10 handle the clip grips real well to my coveralls. (clip it to the pencil pocket on the front)The only thing otherwise Ido is not to bring out my PCKS in the snow.

When I moved from LA to SF I bought a heavy coat, gloves, scarves, galoshes. After a while I realized that while it's much colder than LA, it's still not very cold. So I carry the same stuff year-around. Usually a Gunting clipped to a mini Tek-lok on my belt, or, for variety, a Dodo, Griptilian or TSEK. These are non-utility blades that I try not to cut stuff with. I also keep a small folder in each of my back packs, briefcases, fanny packs, so I always have a utility blade available. Utility blades include a William Henry Kestrel, a Camillus EDC, a well-used Old Timer liner-lock, as well as others that I rotate in from time to time.

I don't really change...My latest EDC combo (fixed and folder) is:

Buck Strider 888 Solution - fixed
Microtech UMS Automatic - folder
One of my neck knifes:
Smith & Wesson Badge Knife (copy of lagriffe)
Camillus Arc-Lite
Cold Steel Spike
CRKT Ryan Plan B
Masters of Defense Scorpion

Along with the rest of my edc:

Surefire M2 (with p61 120lumen lamp assembly)
H&K USP .40 or other fullsize gun
Glock 27 .40 (sub-compact glock for ankle)
Keltec P32 in pocket

Winter carry usually includes at least 2 knives with lanyards, to make for easier retrieval, and a way to secure the knife against loss.

Currently a Boye Prophet, and a BM Eclipse, in addition to an auto, a BM AFO.

Year round it's the same. During work hours I rotate between my two Mnandis. My pick for leisure time EDC is my small Sebbie and one of my "minimalist" V'noxs. I also have an LM Micra on my key ring.

Here, in my part of Oz, while we have the usual four season, the difference between Winter and Summer is nowhere near as great as it is in much of the northern hemisphere. The clothes I would wear are not drastically different throughout the year. A heavier coat while outdoors in Winter but rarely any gloves. Consequently, no real need to change EDC.

My EDC carry never changes. My V-nox Settler and my small Sebenzas are the knives I trust.

sometimes carry my nealy pesh kabz 5" fixed blade or my MOD razorback, usually stick w/a folder though, other than that stays the same.......

*ECA P-Tac, MT SOCOM elite, Crawford Perfigo

*SF E2e

*Spyderco SE Delica or Starmate CE

*Kahr P9 or Glock 33, w/spare mags, sometimes a Glock 32C or a Kel Tec P32 also (2 at most lol, not all 4)

Much more fixed blade carry, and I prefer Micarta in winter. Pocket knives go down in value due to gloves.

Winter means that I wear coveralls to work alot. So I have the usual assortment of knives on me, but the coveralls make them hard to get to. So instead of switching stuff back and forth between pockets, I just keep extra knives in the coveralls. You have to layer knives as well as clothes ya know ;)
Usually carry a 3"-3.5" blade fixed blade in a kydex sheath slipped down in the tool pocket on my right leg, along with a multi tool.Sometimes clip a folder into the pencil pocket up front too.

I normally carry my leatherman wave on my belt year around. During light-clothes weather, my tactical choice is a Kershaw Blackout clipped in the front right pants pocket.

During the winter, with a coat or jacket over my pants, that get's in the way, so I usually switch from the blackout in the pants pocket to a larger-handled Gerber Stud-Gator in the front right jacket-pocket. I don't wear gloves, but it's better to hold on to with slightly cold-numbed hands.

All of our gift giving season in my family is the winter. All of our birthdays fall within weeks of christmas, so, right around that time, I will also carry a Kershaw Rainbow Leek, as a gentleman's knife, for opening presents. It's pretty, and doesn't scare the sheeple much at all.

Edited to add: My wife carries the exact same rotation of the Blackout, Gator, and Leek, the same way(s) and time(s) of year.

PS: On late night walks with my wife, I will conceal a Buck 119 fixed blade, We don't live in a great part of town, but that's a rare carry, and really has nothing to do with summer/winter.

My Sebenza will stay in the pocket but I will probably start carrying a heavier secondary wallet in my jacket pocket such as my Harpy or Scorpius just as a nice serrated utility to back up the plain edge decorated.

Up here in the Great White North I like to carry a steel handle in the summer and a -40 friendly handle in the winter. Zytel is good so is Kraton. Anything that doesn't conduct cold.
