Myself, Ia Woodsman, and Actichy went on a winter overnighter to the Loess Hills, in Iowa. We were suppose to have went to Indian Cave State park in Nebraska, and Bindlestitch was suppose to have come as well/ But due to really crappy freezing drizzle and lots of snow the driving conditions forced Iz to turn back and us to head further north to avoid the weather.

Iz was missed!

Nothing to special just an overnighter, and some chow.

View from the near the camp site, we hiked in a ways, not sure just how far.

The stove worked awesome! About 1130 I built up the fire pretty well before I hit the old fart sack and I still had coals at 7 am! It warmed it right up inthere, I would say it was in the low teens for temp. So it did well.

Our water source for the trip! nice clean snow!

Cooking breakfast the next morning. I do believe I really like bacon on a stick, no clean up !

Me and my homemade pulk sled, it worked well once we got all the gear tied down well. sled worked great around camp for fire wood. I hiked with a pack, because I wasnt sure if there would be enough snow on the ground. And since there was I took everything I could fit!

In all it was a great trip, sucked that Iz couldn't make it. But, next time!

Great pics. What's that knife shown in one of the pics? How much does your home made stove weigh?

Looks like a great trip. I also pack a heated shelter as the stove makes everything so much better. Kinda nice to cook on as well. Smart move burning the zinc off first. Nasty stuff to breath in.

GREAT post! are there any dimensions for this stove u built? I went to the bushcraft site but didn't see any...thanks....

The larger one is 12x8x23 inches the packable one is, 11 3/4 x 8 15 inches. and packs down to just under 2 inches

Very nice! So is the hot tenting hauling worth the extra heat?

Yes KGD well worth it. For an overnight it maybe alittle much if your hiking rough terrain, but for any length of time in cold temps it would be great.

great pix! thanks for sharing. really like that part of the midwest. tho indian cave is great too! lots of good hiking. like those adirondacks here and there. good for overnighters.
