Hey Hogs. I thought you may appreciate a heads up to this if you all weren't aware. A total lunar eclipse will take place during the winter solstice for the first time since 1638. Time Dec 21 @ 0133 EST. Total eclipse last 72 minutes and begins at 0241 EST. This will not occur again until 2094.

I tried my telescope tonight to see the view. Here is a pic through it with my cell phone...HAHA...

I hope you all get a chance to check it out. It is supposed to be a pretty cool show.

Later,

Kevin

I wish my cell phone took pics that good

Thanks for the heads up. Maybe you could get a couple pics of the eclipse if some of us forget, maybe  ;)

NICE!!! A lunar eclipse on my birthday! Thanks for the heads up Kevin; I had no idea. So...the eclipse will happen tomorrow night (Tuesday morning)?! Sorry man, I am an idiot when it comes to military time :o

That's a cool pic Kevin looks like the moon has a few craters in it. Pretty neat shot and thanks for the heads up.

Great shot! Hope someone gets some good pics, as it isn't looking hopeful for a clear night in northern AZ. :(

Happy Solstice and Good Yule to all!

Astronomy Picture of the Day has a story on it today and may have another story on it tomorrow, with pictures of the actual event. Go to http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap101220.html and mouse over the picture for more information.

Lunar eclipses are a regular and fairly frequent phenomenon, much more frequent than solar ecipses, and they last longer and are seen over a wider area.

But for a lunar eclipse to match up against a particular date is a random, rare, and astronomically meaningless coincidence.

Thanks, and that stinks about AZ skies :(

Thanks Esav for the link.

Compact digital camera pic tonight (the moon is hard to get):

snwbrdr202 - Happy B-day man! Yeah, tonight and into tomorrow morning depending on your time zone.

Well, it's snowing here so I don't think the eclipse will be visible for me. :(

Any chance of some pics? ;)

Well, I tried to get pics. I am SURE there are much better available, but these are my attempts:

Through the Televid with a handheld digital P&S (3 progressive pics)

And then it was too dark to capture with the P&S. I switched to the Nikon with a telephoto lens:

The best I could do with what I have. I posted them since they were requested.

Take care,

Kevin

Great pics. I set my alarm and got up at 1:40 to check it out for a few minutes. It was worth it though. When I saw it, it had a reddish hue and a crescent of the right side of it that was much darker than the rest of the moon, but still visible. That lens is awesome:thumbup:

Thanks, I heard it was cool. Pics turned out nicely

Of course the first full lunar eclipse in hundreds of years we had to have snow

The big deal is that it was a full lunar eclipse at the time of the winter solstice, the first day of winter. Lunar eclipses are fairly common, just random, rarely on a day notable for something else as well.

Wait till you get one in warm weather, and get everyone out there with cameras and tripods and telescopes and binoculars, and wine & cheese, and chips & dip ... :D

I think the pics are great, and thanks for posting them!

We had dogs and coyotes howling, but could not see the moon. I appreciate it! :)

Too danged late and snowing here.

I love Lunar Eclipsii (Eclipseses? Eclipicles? Whatever). As the pix above indicate, you truly get a sense of the spherical nature of the heavenly bodies when it occurs. Even with a good telescope, the sunlight washes out the roundness of the moon. Only in an eclipse do you see it's a ball.

Great pix!
