With winter coming on pretty firm I was wondering what sort of training, if any, the RAT members take part in. Do you guys spend time building shelters, or wilderness survival in the cold, or just sit & veg for the winter.

Hopefully doing a three day winter survival course here, end of January. Shelter building, winter travel, survival kit building. Should be a blast!

This year I'll be training in the Bahamas for a couple of weeks. I see hard days of fly fishing the flats, kayak fishing the reefs, and some time working to remove the whiteness from my body...not a typical winter training program but I'll take it. :)

OMG you will have it tough. Please be careful in that clear water that is abundant with shrimp, lobster, fish of about whatever you want ..................
Sorry I had to wipe the drool from my mouth. Have fun.

BenchmadeBoy, that has to be pretty friggin cold up there.

Steelheadr, Now that sounds like some quality training

I'm going to continue my usual outdoor physical training as the temperature goes down. Running becomes a literal pain, but I figure that it's for the best...body is the number two survival tool behind the mind.

As far as technical trainings go, come January I'll be taking a Wilderness First Responder course. If things go as planned I will also do high-angle-rescue and technical ropes this winter as well. I also just completed my SWRT training in the end of November (which was close enough to winter if you ask me, spending that much time in a river).

I am trying to find some form of winter survival training but the whole living in Texas thing makes it somewhat hard because we don't actually have a winter...

And miss the skiing? Why would you do it to yourself !!! :D

I just try to spend as much time in the woods as I can. I trained tent camping year round with the boy scouts. Shetler building is a good skill, and easy in the winter. However I'd recommend packing in tents until your profiecent. They can be amazingly warm set up properly.

I don't know of any formal training, but I'm sure you could get enough advice out of this forum to survive the great whit norf

Personally I still try and keep up on my outdoor activities. First of all I work outside so today while it hits -4 with the wind chill I will be outside working. Also I am going on a backpacking trip this weekend. going to practice some more primitive skills while I am out there.

I was kind of hoping they would do a winter hunt for whitetail here. However it appears they are not so I'll have to find some other excuse to freeze my butt off. :)

I like to go camping in the Winter. Not so much survival training. I'll certainly practice some skills whilst I'm out there, but no major "simulations".

When I'm free from school in a week, I'm gonna go back to the farm and the first thing I'm planning on doing is building a winter shelter. I use my breaks for camping and honing my survival skills because I don't have much time when in school; the winter being no exception.

Will be out working on skills as well; fire building, shelter building, water gathering.

Also this time will be looking for wild edibles, those that might still be out.

Be safe everyone, God Bless!

I have a few winter overnighters coming up here in the soggy/frozen mitten soon.
I am wanting to get out and give my new jansport pack some hard cold season use; see how it holds up.
Mostly hunting treks overnighters and such.

I like to simulate if we got attacked by turkeys and how best to cook them all.

My fav so far, on a stake over coals, with a med sized steel garbage can inverted over it.

You are coming camping in January, correct? I think we could use your "survival food prep skills". lol

Will be out and about, keep the skills in use and spending time with the kid... :)

Sadly, most of the areas I like in NE have turned into tourist cattle trails in the summer, but in winter... ahhhh well, hardly a soul around. Let the temps drop below zero and I get the whole place to myself... :)

So I tend to be more active in the winter for outdoors stuff....
