After focusing my time else where in life, I am getting back into the swing of things and want to improve my knife making... I have made 12 knives in the last 2 weeks and feel ready to completely frustrate myself with a Sub Hilt.

I have read the advice found here on BF and feel pretty confident I can finish this one. I am the type of person that can only figure things out by hands on Exp. I plan on moving as quickly as possible on this Fighter,

Blade Steel: 1095 (10" x 1.5" x .25")
Hilt Steel: 1095
Scales: Black Canvas Micarta or Carbon Fiber?
Pins: 1/8" Stainless Steel
Thong: 1/4" Stainless Steel Tubing
Grind: Hollow

**Attached are the plans:

I will have questions as I go along, and am always looking for Suggestions on how to improve my skills.

Looks good, I sure do like some sub hilt knives especially loveless. Are your sketches more or less just a guideline for you? If not I would try to add just a bit more "flow" to the handle profile and maybe lengthen the clip. I think micarta would be a good choice for scales and maybe micarta pins.

THanks for the input Platypus & Riot...

F14R - I plan on sticking close to the sketch, Can you explain what you mean by "Flow" on the handle? I am guessing you like more curves, I wanted to keep it simple and square to make the scales easier to work with... I like the contrast of the Stainless Pins with the black Scales... I think I will save the Carbon Fiber for another project (Sorry Platypus)

** Took a minute to snap a phone photo of the profiled blade and Hilts (Marked). Getting out the Jewelers files for this one.

It's your knife, I was just thinking about what I like.

I was hinting at more curves, but it doesn't have to be anything to drastic. When I see a handle profile with straight and parallel edges it just screams poor grip to me. Something like this might still be easy enough for you to incorporate into your design with just a touch of belly...

...but once again it is your knife, make it how you want!

I was thinking the same thing, although I'm not sure how to explain it.

I think in your drawing you have put a subhilt handle on a short stout hunter/woodcraft blade ...?

When I think subhilt fighter, I'm thinking long, lean and dangerous...

1-10, looks like we had the same knives in mind when thinking about sub-hilt. I think giving the blade a longer clip would help it look longer and be more the style I (we) am thinking of.

On the other hand the OP sounds like this is just a proof of concept knife and there is no need to sweat the finer details.

just thinking out loud...

I definately love the loveless style, and was concerned about the "Sweep" of the cutting edge, I could lengthen as stated on paper and see what it looks like... I will also play with the pommel shape a bit. I am stuck with the OAL length at this point.

You are correct F14R I am just doing this to work on my skills, it will be mine to use and mess with. Just a test of my abilities at this point.

Thanks for all the input 12345678910....

If it was me I would make the guard taller... subhilts just don't look as well if they don't have a full double guard, but its totally your style to create for your knives. I think your guard would be perfect with a choil that is subhilt

Thanks for the comments. I am always open to suggestions, and wouldn't do something to a knife that I don't like... This being my first sub hilt I am pretty open to anything. Driften has a good point I think the Hilt should be taller. I will take that into consideration on my next one. (I am too lazy to file a new one out, I have this one already fitted)

I completely agree with the "Flow" not being there, I made some changes on the drawing. and decided that Re-curve adds a lot to this knife due to the short size. I am not confident on my ability to grind a re-curve but am willing to give it a shot as well. The grey in the drawing is the old profile, blue line is the new profile.

I have it all ground out. I went with a less agressive Recurve than in the plans, and After assembling the Hilt and Sub hilt, I dont think I left enough room for my fat finger between the two. So I have decided to nix the Sub in my Sub Hilt! LOL

I will get photos up a little later.
