So I have been wanting to make a cleaver type nine mod for a few years now and just never got around to doing it. Have seen a few of them around here.

Well Ever since I got the parangatang, I have started to really like that style tip. So a couple months ago I drew out a similar shape in marker on one of the 9's I had lying around and just look at it sometimes and wonder if I should go forth with the plan. Well tonight I was in the shop waiting for some glue to dry on some kydex and picked the nine up and decided to night was the night to chop it.

So I did and then smoothed it off with a sanding drum. Not sure if I will take anymore off or not. Still trying to get a feel for her before I decide it is good.

I do have some other mods I am going to do to this blade and think the end product will be really kick a$$. We will have to wait and see I guess.

Here is a pic next to the Parangatang.

Here she is all by herself:

I have seen similar mods here on the ol niner. Looks good man.

ooOOOooo.... now grind off the front guard!
that parangatang is a chopping BEAST. I was quite impressed with Bladite's at the Gathering (Northeast)

Hi Dex, The 9 makes a great cleaver. I made one a couple of years ago and have gotten quite a bit of use out of it. As daizee mentioned, the front guard needs to be ground down to get full benefit of the cleaver mod.

Hmmm.... Needs further testing. Send it to me and I'll give you a full report. Eventually! :D

Nice Mod! Kind of a wharncliffe vibe there too. The tips are really close, almost like it was traced.

Now you need to mod the parangatang so you can put a BK handle on it.:)

Thanks Guys!

Hawkhead, how do you like yours? Do you ever take it out and do woods work with it?

I am really digging this thing. I think it will make a great woods knife too. There is just something about it that feels kinda primitive.

It still has the sweet spot for chopping since all I really cut off was the upward curve. Doesn't have extra forward weight the standard 9 has, but it's not bad. Did some testing today.

Gonna make some custom handles for it and change the shape up a bit.

Then it's getting Parkerized. I kinda want to etch blue bleach the flats on it. Not sure though.

Hmmm.... Needs further testing. Send it to me and I'll give you a full report. Eventually! :D
Better Idea: You just send me your BK-9 and I will copy this one for you. :)

Oh and I saved the cut off piece and think I am going to make a little hand blade scraper thingy.

My cleaver is strictly for vegetable prep and meat chopping. I like it a lot. I have better control with it than a standard meat cleaver. The smoothe Alumahyde 2 coating is still on.

Yeah great work lads, very unique and funtional by the looks of things. I must say it looks great with the coating on as well.

Here's my plan for a 7" BK9.

From sketch to reality ...

... almost! ;)

Man, is that tip going to be thick! Any recommendations before I start cutting?

Love that thing HawkHead! Nice work my friend.

That will be awesome Travis if you do that mod! Go slow. You will probably want to use a cutting wheel to get the majority of the work done. A dremel with the black cutting disc is what I like to use. Just take your time. I keep a bucket of water under the blade and a sponge that I dip in the water and set on top the blade. After every pass I just squeeze the sponge and it keeps the blade cool.

I want to make a short BK9 similar to that too. Love the width of the blade on the 9 compared to the others in the line up.

The tip will need to be thinned out though. I dropped one of my nines and took off about an inch and love it. I did thin the tip out some. Could go a little more but I kind of like it robust.

Bead blasted my chopped 9 this weekend and will be posting pics soon.

And The more I play around with it, the more I like it. I can see it becoming one of my main woods knives paired with an 11 or 16. Then add the Kukri and I'm set!

Have I mentioned that I love this thing?!

Still working on her but got her to where I can at least get some use and decide if I need to make anymore changes before she's done.
