Under the wonderful guidance of Stacy E. Apelt - Bladesmith I made this knife from a rusty old file. He told me how to anneal the file to make it easier to cut and grind, how to quench it to the best of my ability with the tools I had, and how to finish it- and many others, as well as what kind of epoxy to use if I insisted on making my own denim "My-carta". Happy 4th everybody

I wonder how many of these “box of materials” this guy has sent out to up and coming knife makers through the years?!? Stacy has always been the first to offer help, ideas, materials, tools and so much more. If I answered “how do I heat treat this (insert every stupid thing a first knife is made from) as many times as he has I’d be Elon musk rich! What’s he ask for in return… “make this one better than the last and send me some pics!” Hope everyone realizes how lucky we are to have him and people like him supporting the youth of this craft! If you haven't heard it recently Stacy, Thank you for everything you’ve done on this forum and not only for me but each and every one who’s learned from you!

That's a good looking knife, and this is an awesome post. I've been thinking about trying my hand at making a knife out of an old file as well. The results the OP got are really excellent!

This is a basic tutorial for making a knife from a file. The process of knifemaking is discussed in many of the other stickies, and this tutorial will only deal with the basics. For more detailed info on making your first knives, see the sticky, "How to Instructions for Making a Knife". For details on annealing and heat treatment, see the HT and metallurgy stickies. Shop safety should always be observed, especially eye protection when grinding.

You can make a knife from anything that is hard enough to be sharp….but...

Hello to all! I show you how I make my file knives, with little tools... Let's start with some old files, re-tempered in my kitchen oven, about 450 degrees, two cycles of 1 hour each:

I cut the file to lenght:

With my grinder and an expander wheel with a 40 grit zirconia belt, I shape freehand the profile of the blade (I have to frequently dip the blade in water):

With a marker, I draw the edge. The tape will...
