I was unsure if I should put these up considering the quality of mod one sees on this forum. All of this is my first time modding a knife, convexing building scaled etc etc.
But here it is
My BK14, Polished, patina-ed (use not force), re-handled and convex-ed.
Polished with 320 to 1500 grit and then used mostly in the kitchen for a cpl weeks.
Same set of grits to convex and then black emery and green buffer on a strop (also handmade :) )
Found some very hard wood the provenance of which remains unknown but was a bitch to work with.
The only power tool used in this entire mod was a drill to make the holes in the scales. They are carved with my Scamp and sanded and polished up to 1200 grit. Fastened with (and this is my fav part) aluminium bolts and Araldite. After which I sawed them off and sanded down with the scales. The fiber liners were made with the strips the wifey uses to wax:D. Superglued and pressed 3 layers for each side. Cut thick leather into the lil circle and the triangle in the handles and glued them in along with the scales.

NEed to polish it back up to mirror finish and force a reasonable patina on it.

I tried convexing and it gets sharp but snaggy. Might go back to the V edge on it and practice convexing on something else for a bit.
The Patina is lemon juice and vinegar with a few q-tips.

Reading. You can has it. :)

Nice job. Are you going to round the handles at all, or leave them as is? I've got to get a 14 at some point to experiment with.
No actually. I like the bulk of the handle. Plus I don't have any power tools other than the drill so I can't round them effectively.
I sanded the profile sides on a mousepad to get a slight curve and the flat sides...well flat. My wrists hurt getting that taper on the scales on sandpaper :D. I dint know what wood it is but it is very dense. However I did round off the sharp edges into a sort of bevel so no hot spots. Also the pointed shape at the top of the scales lets me hook my finger around it so I can pinch grip properly for food prep. Which is what this knife gets used for mostly.

Yeesh. Yeah, I love my power tools. Have you tried any tung or danish oil on those scales? And what grit did you sand them to? I'd love to see those get taken to high grit too, and see what kind of lustre and figure you can get out of that wood. I wonder what kind of wood it is.

Thanks Indian,
I did not think of applying in layers..
Thank you but it actually came out by accident. I applied the "tiger stripes" (that's what I was trying) with lemon juice and mustard mix and waited 5 minutes and then wiped it off and did dots of the same mix again. Sort of a second coat. And then did a vinegar soak. Fortunately none of this seems to have harmed the handle.

I wonder too. Its just heavy and hard. When I dropped the scales it sounded more like I was dropping dense plastic. I have sanded the wood to 1200. It doesn't take on a good shine and has darkened a bit only from the oils on my hand I guess. I soaked the knife in sunflower oil for a day after I was done sanding too. Its quite odorless and soaks in decently. I looked for Linseed oil which is what the use on cricket bats and bo staffs here but no luck.
