So I was a little surprised to see a 4 on this double bit. I don't have a postage scale to weigh with. Either way, the angle grinder with a wire cup brought a nice patina. Not done sharpening yet though.

Can read Charleston, wva, usa under Kelly.

Was planning to. Must be some hard metal, taking forever to sharpen out the chips with a file. Or I'm doing it wrong. I've gotten one side past the chips, just have to thin the profile back out. Other side untouched still.

Yes, they're very hard steel and require a good sharp file. Also, the oxidation layer tends to be even harder than the underlying metal. If you get a small patch started and then work out from there it's a little easier. It's best to secure the axe in a vise while you work. If the file chatters, squeals or skips then try changing the speed and/or pressure until it cuts smoothly.

Two Kelly four pound double bits. Picked up on ebay after contacting the seller and then using a Buy IT Now method. They were a good deal.

The one stamped U.S.A. is a military issue axe. They are big boys.

Compared to a Kelly Perfect 3.5 pound double bit.
