WIP - Mini Hunter Companion

This is an idea I had last night, working on it today. It still has a ways to go but I'm taking a break from the heat, where I live is feeling like 40'C with the humidity.

Thought I'd see what you guys think

I decided to drill the holes and then harden the blade, without removing any material. It's taking a little longer to grind but it's kind of nice to know that it's already hardened.

The concept is that it is a "hunter's companion"....a small blade but 1/4 thick at spine so it will be a capable chopper that can double as a slicer / meat processor / small game chopper.

why did you harden it first, again? it seems like you will waste belts that could have just chewed the soft steel. nice looking knife, though.

IMHO...
Thin blades slice better than thick blades.
In my experience of butchering beef as well as cutting up deer, large bones are cut with a saw, and thin, narrow blades are needed to get in around the bones.
As a chopper, specifically for processing meat, it is lacking size and weight.
I think it may be rather heavy to carry around on your belt all day.

I'm saying that I think it is both too small and too large for the functions you listed.

I see it being more useful skinning large animals and as a wedge for splitting small logs for kindling. It could maybe be used as a spatula for flipping fried eggs and pancakes for breakfast.

@ thegeek, I hardened first because I've been getting pretty serious bending with this latest batch of 1095. I was hoping that leaving all the material on would help reduce the amount of bending, and it did. But it's def not my "normal" way of doing things, just trying new stuff.

@ lone pine, the flat grind is really close to 2 inches deep, now although it is far from being as thin as a butchers knife, I'm hoping that it still slices well, and the bulk is just for me, I like heavy, "solid knives"....but then again, it's just a concept, I may hate it when its done! and yeah, I was messing with those grinds for close to 2 hours!
